I just need to be 100 per cent a '96 frame will be good exact fit if I decide to get a salvaged one (new one is over $4k  just for the part) from the west and have it powdercoated if I need a future swapout
also, why mine is not totally trashed (just surface spots now that need cleaning) like some I have seen here that are 'newer' than mine,
my only explanation is the materials used when you said the leaf spring changes
... yet @FreshOldTaco had a '97 that failed in 'o8 (if I remember correctly) and mine passed in 'o11 while my relatives '98 failed at that time

my production date was 4/97 if that counts for all those changes during that year

It does "Engine Check Light" (or "Malfunction Indicator Lamp", like EWD says) suggesting problem with the engine. Like you wrote, EVAP has nothing to do with the engine, and engine runs fine when EVAP is inop so it should not belong to ECM. Like airbag, it should have its own control module. Would be much easier to strip the truck from EVAP, which is not required in Europe.

I am not talking about O2 sensors. They are actually vital to air-fuel mixture calculation and engine control. They are also part of Emission system, but that is OK - emission is byproduct of combustion so Emission system is a part of combustion process optimization. I'm OK with it.

EVAP system is the fuel vapor control. It is so fuel vapors from the fuel tank do not go to atmosphere when vehicle is not running. This is the famous "charcoal canister" and dreaded "P0456 Evaporative Emissions System – Small Leak Detected" code. The whole concept of EVAP came from EPA and thankfully is not mandated in Europe yet. Single farting "Happy California Cow" puts more hydrocarbons to the atmosphere than a Walmart parking lot. And yet nobody requires to stick a charcoal canister to cow's ass (yet ... wait for it "Republic of California").

So in short the EVAP system will cause the Engine Check Light to come up, which without pulling the code via scanned may scare crap out of you on your road trip deep into Nevada desert the same way, as major failure like engine overheating, missfire, or any major engine failure that can strand you there. I had Sienna I took my old (very old) parents on a road trip and in the middle of nowhere the engine check light came up - I almost pissed myself. But the van was still running normally so I just turned back home. Scanner showed P0456 - pissed me off again. That would be like the computer would pop the ECL because you dome light bulb is burned. :jerkoff:

I removed the charcoal can in my Miata (a lot of folks do on NA/Gen 1 models). That was at about 250-300,000 miles.

Would a removal throw a code on Taco ECUs?

I haven’t thought of doing it yet, but could be helpful if an issue comes up.

Might be better to start your own thread, rather than asking within the 95.5 picture thread. I’m sure the answer is on here.

Also, add the specific configuration too. (2wd/4wd, cab type, etc)
If the whole 97 year used the short springs, then that should be all that matters.

i just thought my truck was 'more closely' related to yours here, after my year there are not as many similarities that I see
and I do have a small connect with having a '95 preTaco for 2yrs lol

just wanted the best 'free' help i can find :)

Ah, I see. Correct that the second sensor does not control the engine, just monitors efficiency of catalytic converter. Same thing like a burned bulb in dome light would trigger ECL.

I just checked electrical diagram for 95.5 and vacuum hose routing diagram under my hood:

    upload_2019-5-15_14-12-41.jpg

I think you are right that plugging the line to or from VSV for EVAP will disable the entire EVAP system. And on EWD I did not see any vapor pressure sensors like in the later models. That might be the option of removing charcoal canister (and plugging all lines to it) if needed and use that space for something useful. I guess 95.5 is much easier to smog in California. Maybe that ECU never throws any EVAP codes?:notsure:

You do need to vent the line from the gas tank. The Miata folks simply remove the plug from the tank to the can & plug it into the chassis fastener that was from the bottom of the can to vent out through the chassis.
Then, you cap the intake tube on the cam cover.

    If removing the can:
You need to keep the gas tank vented, but need to cap all engine system intake tubes (so doesn’t inhale anything you don’t want it to.

I might be wrong, but I thought the gas cap has dual valve - easy sucking air into the tank and pressure relief if canister is plugged. Again, I might be wrong about the pressure relief thing, but it could be easy added using existing lines going to the canister.

What is the "football" canister? My truck was from Cali so it has EGR. And the canister is a huge square box next to brake pump (I'd love to use that spot for additional fuse box with relays).

FSM shows the round canister in 2WD models. 4WD is big square box. FSM for 4WD also shows Vapor pressure sensor feeding ECM and the pressure on that sensor is controlled by ECM (VSV for Vapor Pressure Sensor). That is not the case for 2WD models.

I'm looking for a 1995.5 thru 1997 regular cab 4x4 in good condition. If anyone knows of any for sale. I'm in South Carolina, but not afraid to drive for the right truck. I know they are extremely hard to find, but maybe someone knows where some are. Not interested in the way over priced eBay trucks.

Getting this thread back to the top with some photos from this week!

Removed all factory decals, replaced tailgate and had a friend of mine do a full detail on the truck!

Finished it off with some fresh decals and a custom aluminum bumper delete and we are back in the biz!

there was a green 95.5 one on a used lot here for $5k, not sure if deemed 'good' condition ... had about 150k miles or so (its been a couple months since I checked)
    needs body work majorly

pretty sure I have the same type seats
my drivers side is developing a peculiar gremlin of a squeak :( every time I twist my crooked back (especially on the corners)
not sure what I am in store for to ELIMINATE that pesky buggard, almost as bad as my croaky door haha

anybody have experience with that? ... are there more than 3 of us with these seats on TW

going to have my frame borescoped see what gremlins lie within (hopefully none)
