It pretty much comes down to our 4:10 gear ratio, ride height, tire weight, and manual tranny, look at the v6 manual tacos, I've heard as far low as 13mpg

I live in Dallas TX so pretty flat around here.

I have an '08 AC Prerunner. Initially, I got 18-ish and it improved over the 1st couple thousand miles to what it is today which is right around 21.

I have about a 50/50 mix of city and highway driving. I don't race the truck but I don't baby it either.

    Hope that helps.

I filled my tank for the first time this afternoon. I haveraged 23.4 mpg in mine. I keep to a maximum speed of 55mph and had nasty headwinds and snow on my first drive home with it. Tonight, I have ~250 pounds of hay and dog food in the bed.

I have an 06, 4cyl, access cab, manual tranny, prerunner, 54k miles. My average is 21-ish, though one time I burned almost a whole tank on the highway giong 70mph and I got 19.7 mpg. Is 2700 rpms normal at 70mph?

I filled my tank for the third time yesterday. 25.8 mpg. I'm off the next two days, so the Trans Am will come out to play. The Tacoma will see 1k miles on the odometer on Thursday. I think it's breaking in nicely.

Wolfman, my Tacoma is a 2010, 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual, Access Cab, PreRunner. I drive very conservatively and the terrain in Coastal North Carolina is flat - absolutely no hills! I don't tow anything and I have never had more than 200 pounds in the back of the truck. I keep the tire pressure at 34 pounds - everything on the truck is stock. I can't get better than 19 - 20 on the highway running 65 MPH (in 5th gear of course). Is your truck body a regular cab? That's about 300 pounds lighter than an Access Cab but still I would not think that would make that much difference in MPG. I wish I could get the mileage you get. What's your secret? Thanks.

Your mileage does sound a bit low. I can get 22-23 all day long going 65-70. I saw on Wolfman's Fuelly log he keeps it at 55 or less. That can make a big difference. I noticed yesterday when i was stuck at 55-60 all the way home that I averaged over 24 on my scangauge. Available fuel can also make a difference. Some areas still have the non ethanol gas which helping them do a bit better.

Mine is a prerunner access cab. You can see pics of it in my intro thread here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/new-members/82439-greetings.html

What I do to maximize fuel economy is keep to a top speed of 55 mph, take advantage of every opportunity to let the vehicle coast (still in gear) when I'm approaching a red light, minimize the use of A/C, do not let it warm up in the morning, and shift gears right around 2,000 rpm. I have a long commute at 50 miles one way, and it is approximately 90% highway with just enough traffic lights to be irritating.

future plan of 2" drop and any type of rim thats not a steelie. grille and BHLM mods, maybe....

when you bog the motor down, you use more fuel. takes less fuel even though your engine is revving higher, because you are using its HP in that range. the more you push the pedal at low speeds, the TB pulls more vaccum and more fuel is dumped. never bog the motor. i rarely use 5th gear on the local highways as im cruising 55-60mph and its bel0w 2k. i get better mpg with it in 4th as im going up hills and such, im less in the pedal and use the rpms/hp to move the truck not mashing the pedal. i dont have a prerunner but my 2010 ac 2wd 5 spd sr5 5lugger gets 21 city 22-23 mixed and TBD on strictly highway. im going to NC from NJ in a few weeks and ill post milage afterwards. you sound like your getting low mpg for what it is. whats the rear axle gearing????

I just turned 179 mi. in my truck, just below a quarter tank right now.....looks like i might get 250ish or a little over for the tank, I haven't had time to even find out how big our tank is. I am still breaking it in....I believe stations here are still using ethanol gas right now.......and mileage sucks in the winter. But for the last 15+ yrs. my company has paid for my gas so I never really worry about MPG........

i normally get around 20 in my 08 with mixed driving. if i get on the interstate i can get over 25. i started off shifting at lower rpm ranges but normally stick to around 3000 and there hasn't been any difference. i'm running with 4 wheel drive too.

I filled my fourth tank today. This one included dragging an empty motorcycle trailer around for about 50 miles. It wasn't heavy, but does add rolling resistance and air drag. This tank still came in at 25.5 mpg.

My last tank was the best I've gotten at 22.1mpg. I ran some fuel treatment in the previous tank and took out my secondary filter after 3/4 of the last tank. One of those made a big difference because I floored it quite a few times and drove faster than usual on the highway and still set my record for best fuel economy. It'll be interesting to see what I get with this tank if I can make myself drive normal.

I've got 1200 miles on a 2010 4cyl 5sp AC 5 lugger and am getting around 24 mpg which is about 80% highway driving. I have been driveing fairly conservatively and try to keep highway speed between 70-72 mph (turning 2200-2300 rpm at 70mph). I hope this number will improve a couple mpg once the truck is broken in, AFE filter, and removal of charcoal filter.

Has anybody noticed any improvement in mpg with higher octane fuels? I have only tried 87 octane.

mods are 265/65R17s and afe pro dry drop in filter.
