Well im glad I found this thread , what did your dealer do ? Mine has the same tick and it ticking me off as its a brand new truck and sounds like a exhaust leak for sure. I bought mine to the dealer they pulled another of the "lot" and parked them both next to each other and the "lot" truck made ZERO noise. They had the Mech look at it and he came up with nothing. They are going to ask the Field rep what to do, but certainly this is very dissappointing.

So i guess they all dont do it.

Fuel injectors will make a ticking noise, some louder than others.

You can go under the 2nd Gen thread and a sticky under mods. Towards bottom there is a thread about ticking. Their a bolt that's easy to access that you can put two rubber washers under. Still some tick but not as bad and could possibly help the OCD.

I think the 2011 is the first year this noise started.I had a 06 and 09 I used 5w30 full synthetic in that did not make this noise.Mine does this also.Mine does it until it warms up to operating temp. You notice it under exceleration.I think it is valve lash noise. As it warms up the gap gets tighter and the noise goes away.Older trucks had 5w30 oil which fills that gap a little more.I bet they are putting in 0w20 at the factory as Toyota is converting to 0w20 full synthetic on all their fleet.A Toyota dealer near me said they put in 0w20 in on all oil changes now even if it calls for 5w30.I am not going to worry about it.With Toyota changing the oil for two years we don't know what they put in.Maybe someone will do a oil change theirself and put 5w30 in and see if it makes any difference. From what I have heard all 2012 models will be required 0w20 full synthetic with 10,000 mile oil changes. They claim a .4 to .6 MPG increase using 0w20 synthetic.

My dealer did the exact same thing. I have not followed up with any other corrections. Very disapointed that a $30,000.00 truck would sound louder then my lawn mower!

do not get me wrong here i'm not leaning either way really. one side of me is saying no car or truck should be making the type of noises my truck does. they are very agricutural sounding, so yeah i do believe my cub cadet has a more refined engine lol. the other side of me says stop being a pussy head it's a truck and toyota has built a pretty damn good reputation building them. so it seems i'm at odds with myself and believe it or not this does actually detract from me enjoying the truck a little. i put a great sounding exhaust on mine anyway, but i did not want to do so to cover up imho one of the loudest engine bays i have ever heard. my truck had an exhaust on it from day 3 and when driving along a guard rail another car or god forbid a wall or divider of some type it sounds less refined than my friends yugo! and yes he really has a yugo lol its actually not a bad little car .

My 2011 tends to have the "Tacoma Tick" when the engine is warm. I really don't notice the ticking when first started - like in the morning, after sitting all night. The oil viscosity is interesting. I will ask the service manager when I go in for service, his thoughts on that.

just turn the radio up, thats what i do. my theory is, yes i did pay 28k for a tacoma that has the toyota tick, but atleast it won't be worth half that in 5 years and have horrible stability like any other truck on the market.

Just like what others have said, if you don't like it, take it to the dealer, thats what the warranty is for.

I test drove 3 including my own before I bought it. All were new, all had the tick. I think it sounds disgusting and almost didn't buy it for this reason if that is a reason at all.

Ya know-I can see what you are saying-I remember when I was a kid my parents' '72 Ford Ranch Wagon with that anemic 351 Windsor v8 that ran on 7-1/2 cylinders had a valve tik that lulled me to sleep:D

This bothered me the first few months of owning my taco too. I hated going through drive thru's because I would always hear it. Went to the dealership and drove another similar taco...does the same thing. Haven't thought about it since then. This was 3 years ago, lol. :D

I have the same issue with my 2009 DC TRD. Then after a few visits to the dealership... they told me that it is because the exhaust manifold is thinner than it probably should be. He said because Toyota is looking at ways to shave down weight to increase fuel consumption... I say its because they wanted to save $5 by using a thinner gauge material.
He also mentioned the "Tacoma Tick" is normal... still doesn't make it right. Kinda sucks when your driving with your buddies and you step on the gas, and it sounds like a sewing machine. Still wouldn't trade it in for any other truck though.
