I was just throwing that out there if the brake ideas didn't reveal anything.

This gives me hope! Will love it if it’s this simple.

A possibility, they adjusted the drum self adjusters too tight. Or took it apart and put it back together wrong. Or your shoes are binding on the backing plates. Maybe a spring broke but if someone was looking at it 2 weeks ago, probably not.

Adjusting, it’s been posted multiple times the correct procedure. I believe it’s adjust until it won’t tighten anymore, then back off 15 clicks.

Getting it put back together wrong is easy to do. Since drum hardware is all basically the same but always different, I do one side at a time and take pictures before disassembly. You can probably find detailed pictures here.

The spots where the shoe touches the backing plate should have a TINY dab of lube to prevent binding and wear.

If you have the tools and ambition, get the rear up, in neutral, park brake off, the wheels should spin freely fwd/rev. Step on the brake pedal, let it up, again wheels should spin freely. If you still have ambition, pull the wheels and drums off. If adjusted too tight, the drums might not come off, don’t force it and break something. I prefer backing off on the adjustment to get the drums off. Or you could use the drum bolt holes to push them off. Wash it all down with brake cleaner if it comes off.

If you have no ambition or just switched to decaf, take it back to the shop that adjusted it and tell them the symptoms reminding them they just did work on it.

Sound like what my Ranger was doing for awhile because of the rear drums. Also a potential if it's related to the rear brakes (I didn't read the whole thread, I'm at work - shhhhhhh...) is if the shoes are reversed. I'm not sure about Tacos, but if the leading and trailing shoes are reversed, it can bind too.

Ha. Nice. I have no place to work on a vehicle (besides my dirtbikes) unfortunately (I say unfortunately but I'm not sure I have the ambition either way). I do have an appointment Tuesday at the shop that saw it a couple weeks ago. I'll give them this list you guys have given me,
    Debris,
    Broken Parking Brake Cable,
    Chunks in Diff,
    MisAdjusted Self Adjust,
    Put Together Backwards,
    Shoes Binding on Backing Plates.

I'm sure mechanics don't love the "list from the internet" thing but I don't care. You guys are all doing this stuff all the time and all drive the shit out of Tacomas so thanks! Love this forum.

Sounds like a good plan. Hopefully they’ll stand behind their work, all shops should. Some will try to weasel their way out trying to convince you you did something wrong or it has nothing to do with what they did. Sometimes there’s some truth there but you gotta sift through the bs. Don’t you know not to drive during a lunar eclipse? The gravitational pull causes the springs to release and if you were driving when this happens we need to replace all the springs.

Update: Shop says I need $1000 worth of brake work. Says the springs and inner workings are worn out and now things are warped from overheating. Interesting that this is the case only 2 weeks after I picked it up from an inspection by their shop at which point they said the brakes looked great and had plenty of life left. I get they might not have looked deep enough to see the inner workings were wearing out but for it to be fine when I dropped it off and now warped and in need of replacing seems like a function of whatever they did during the inspection/adjustment.

If they checked the life of the (assuming) rear brake shoes then they would have seen what they are seeing now. They didn't look at em.

Yeah. I feel a bit put off about it. I just talked to the manager, maybe owner of the shop and he said it just didn't look like it was going to fail when they inspected it and now it has. There's nothing they could've seen or done and it didn't have anything to do with what they did. It just failed. He seems truthful and like a decent guy. Shop gets great reviews. Who knows.

I feel like it was something they should've found but it might have been preexisting. I've always felt something not quite right about these brakes. I researched odd engine braking previously and it felt like the answer I got (that these trucks do some computer breaking or engine breaking that's different than my 1st gen and it feels weird) was reassuring but maybe it was always dragging a bit and not releasing quite as well as it should. Sporadic issues are hard to diagnose I guess. I was really hoping the 60k service for 700 bucks would give me peace of mind but I guess I'll have a new brake situation now.

One minute they were good and the next they weren’t. It is what it is. Just replaced all my brake lines with ni-cop. Let the good times roll! Good luck!

Went from passed with flying colors to bent, overheated, and warped..? Someone didn't do their job. I wouldn't go back, but I wouldn't have gone in the first place. I do all my own work. I know normal people need places like that.. But then you're on here.. None of us are normal.

Yeah. It feels real jacked up to be completely at the mercy of mechanics. I can get by on a motorcycle but never got into the car maintenance thing. So I reap what I sow (or don't as the case may be).
    Thanks for everyone's input!

Ha. Just bought the wreck too! On the recommendation and further confirmation of multiple mechanics! Damn. I do love it though. I'll forget about that 1000 bucks soon enough.

This sounds high. But if you add up drums, hardware, shoes, wheel cylinders, plus labor it's probably right.

I have a shop I take mine to when I'm too lazy or it's something like rebuilding a transmission, owner was my neighbor. I know if this situation came up they'd give me a break on the labor, which is something your shop should do if they expect repeat business. I still suspect they overtightened the self adjusters. I'm sure overtightening would cause cooked shoes, hardware, wheel cylinders, and warped drums. Also some extreme strain on the transmission and differential.

    Update 2:
They only charged me $700. That felt good. Until today when I heard the scraping rear brakes noise again. Either my truck is jacked up or these guys are adjusting the brakes wrong, in which case they owe me $700.
