I knew OVTune was solid even before he tackled the Tacoma. I just stayed on the bench too long, waiting for the results to come in and now too anxious. Just a little hesitant on modding a $40000 truck at first but now I can't wait.

Thanks all I reach out to Matt D\directly.

Would love to try this on our trucks to feel the difference.

Hahah, right!? I wonder how much of a difference this would actually make. More torque down low possibly since it wouldnt be in atkinson cycle when cruising

Ya and Matt said it might take a slight hit to MPG but eh, cant be that bad. Im only averaging 18-19 anyway.

Yeah my mpg is pretty terrible seeing as how cruising highway speeds here in southern california are 80mph.

Edit- plus lift and tires dont help

If it takes more than 30% throttle to maintain speed then you aren’t using Atkinson Cycle anyways. I would think that getting a MT moving from a stop will be easier without the low compression (low torque) response of the Atkinson mode. Especially when towing. I’d like to see Atkinson when cruising, only have it available at speeds of 25mpg or higher maybe? I don’t know that the full OTTO would really be that appealing to the AT crowd other than maybe having better low speed response under 30% throttle.

I think someone had pitched a similar idea to Mat when discussing otto maps before, where otto and Atkinson would be used conditionally. I believe Mat had said it was sort of all or nothing. Either you go full otto or you just don't touch it and take it as it is.

I think that I remember that now.

Or in the case of the MT, traction control off = full Otto, if that’s even possible to put it on a switch.

But.. I don't have an ECT button.

Come to think of it, that's because I don't have an ECT. I have a HCT.

Some back and forth with Mat WRT full OTTO (from the M/T thread):

    Me:

    I was thinking about this..

Perhaps turn the way Toyota did this on it's head - Start off in Otto (regardless of rpm), and then when up to a certain speed and only in low load conditions, allow the engine to go Atkinson. I mean the truck already has plenty of power in 6th on the highway with this tune IMO...

TL;DR - OTTO 1st to 5th, Atkinson in 6th w/ low load. Will still allow you to save gas a bit.

Offer OTTO tunes as a alternative along with the regular releases maybe, because some peeps will not want to take the mileage hit.. anyway, something to think about while Mat gets the current tunes buttoned up :)

    Mat:

what you're thinking is impossible to do, camshaft timing control is based on engine RPM and load. There is no way around it. That's how it works.

So if it’s all rpm and load based, I wonder if Atkinson could only be allowed between 1500-3000rpm, that way we can have the initial Otto response at low rpms and still have Atkinson for cruising...

Geez this thread is getting bloated.

Anybody / @OVTune know what happened to the 1.03 C update? Wasn’t it suppose to drop this week? I can’t even tell now with all this turbo talk and MT guys frothing over it

He said he's putting a few "extras" into the maps since he's doing an update anyway

Word has it, Mat has moved to the east coast. Of Mexico. And he's taken all your $ and dongles with him while he sips shade-grown Central American coffee from a cabana along the Yucatan...
