I just picked up a preowned set of the stock Bilstein shocks and coils off of a 2016 TRD Off Road DCSB but trying to figure out which side is which. I dont think the back ones make a difference, but I think the front ones do. Does anyone know which color dots are for which side? Or if someone could be so kind as to check on their 2016 OR front coils to see which dots are on which coils. Got one with red and lt. green dots and the other with red and lt. blue dots.

I am hoping someone here on TW would be able to answer this. I have attached a picture of the front shocks/coils for reference.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure which set is which side, but the springs themselves are side specific.

    The struts are universal.

When you put the top plate bolts in the holes in the tower, the bottom bolt hole will only lineup on one side. The top plate (clocking) determines which side it goes on..

I just checked my 2017 OFf road.

Here it shows driver side with green and passenger with blue.

    Hope this helps.

    With OEM springs yes: https://parts.toyota.com/images/parts/toyotaOEM/fullsize/a1_484202C.jpg

    P/N 48220xxxxx on the driver's side. P/N 48210xxxxx on the passenger side.

IIRC you can also tell by the keeper clip where the parking brake cable clamp bolts to. There's more gap between the clip and the leaf on the outboard side.

AFAIK none of the aftermarket springs and shocks are side-specific, except some coilovers with angled resi hose.

Good info. Didn't think these were side specific.

I've gone through a couple of muscle car restorations - GM and Ford - and found front coil springs may or may not be wound from the same wire diameter. This even when the numbers of coils and winding is identical ....... The rate was different side for side, to establish the desired ride height of the assembled vehicle and the parts had differing part numbers. Has someone used a mic on one of these sets of springs? The GTO springs varied by 1/64 of an inch - couldn't be seen at a casual glance.

That's interesting. Spring rates increase by power of 4 on wire dia., so it's a very effective way to stiffen a spring without changing its form factor by much. Though I imagine it would take a GM-sized company to get steel mills to produce special wires 1/64" larger.

My past engineering experience (old now) was that the big steel producers would make whatever you wanted - so long as you were ordering 40,000 pounds (a truck load).
