I have searched and cannot find a similar case like this.

I just received my 2020 Pro on Friday. Today on the way to work with 116 miles while listening to XM the sound just cut off.

Would let me change station, source, but if turn volume knob it would stay on what it was at and number wouldn’t change.

Powering down while driving did not reset it, but truck off then on did work.

On way home the same thing happened.

Did it by chance happen in the same spot as maybe you just hit a dead zone for satellite coverage

Does it only happen when listening to XM or while listening to Bluetooth or the radio too?

Right now it was separate spots. But this morning was 5 mins in, way home was about 25 mins. Could be something with satellite.

Although my 2nd gen with XM and wife’s 4 Runner never had a hiccup.

Today was first day I drove it to work. On way home from dealer “same road” it didn’t do it. Today both times were for sure XM on. May try FM radio where it cut out this morning tomorrow and we will see.

Mine has a random blackout moment too. Its happened with car play and with regular bluetooth. No clue why. Gonna talk to toyota about it but I think its gonna be a tough sell because its completely random and probably impossible to replicate.

It could be your XM antenna or the XM signal in those areas like @shakerhood mentions above. Check the radio and if it doesn't happen with the that or the bluetooth then it might not be the head unit.

Does it stay that way until you turn truck off and on.

Forgot you had mentioned that you did that and it worked. I was just suggesting that you check everything to rule out things the dealer will say work and then tell you it's not the headunit.

On my '18 OR every once in a while the bluetooth doesn't connect unless I start playing my music from my phone. It's been like that for a while and I just live with it. Figured that if I take to the dealer and it doesn't happen while it's there then it's moot point.

Thank you sir, my bad I misread your post so my comment made no sense. We will see, I know the one thing I don’t to do it have dealer rip it all out of the dash if it was a common or quick fix

I went through a period of time (1-2 weeks) where mine did something similar. That was a few months ago and then it has been fine since. Mine would do this when I was listening to music on my phone through Apple car play. I was convinced it was some interference with blue tooth, but never figured out the root cause. Not sure if it was exactly the same problem as you, but I definitely had the same symptom where I couldn’t control volume from the steering wheel and the knob wouldn’t change the volume either.

My XM subscription had lapsed by then, so my issue definitely wasn’t related to satellite radio.

Here is my original post. Looks like one other person had similar issue, but no idea what the problem was. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/issue-using-carplay-on-2020-tacoma.666254/

Yesterday FM to work without any issues.
XM on way home without any issues.
Today XM to work without any issues.
XM on way home froze again, and like I said can use NAV, plug in for Apple CarPlay, switch to FM and volume numerical icon stays on (whatever it last was) turn up or down number is froze and no sound until turn the truck off and back on.

Push and hold down the volume button to reboot the head unit. Not sure why, but I need to do that to mine every few days. It's annoying but a simple enough fix that it hasn't bothered me to pursue further.

I'd take it to the dealer. You have a brand new truck with factory warranty.

Yep that’s what I’ll end up having to do even though it’s the last place I want to take a truck with 175 miles. Hoping it was a quick fix so threw it out on here.

Now the BS of recreating for a dealer to see it happen.

Hopefully you have a good dealer to take it to and they take care of your problem. Keeps us posted as to what happens and what's causing the problem.
