I've always been jealous of the V6 guys with the oil filter on top and the oil collector under the filter. Then the 3rd Gen V6 guys got an improved cartridge filter on bottom of the 3.5L.
I tried everything from cut up bottles to the bag method, but it was cumbersome and wasn't much better- I'd had enough.

It uses the cap and filter for the 3.5L V6 (parts on the left).

Installation was easy, two bolts and a nut. Replaced the O-ring and seal.
I did the swap from behind the cross member, no need to remove the pan.

The bottom plug screws off with the square end of a 3/8 ratchet; there's a valve that opens when you screw in the plastic drain nipple that comes with the filter.

I don't know about that... the stock 2TR-FE oil filter is one of the easiest oil filters I've ever had the pleasure of changing and I never spill a drop. How are you guys changing your oil???

You’re absolutely right, it’s got space around it- but location isn’t the issue, it’s orientation.

Isn't upright the ideal orientation? I can easily catch every drop of spilled oil from an upright filter like is on my 2TR and the 350 in my Camaro. My later model Grand Marquis with the Ford 4.6 had a horizontally oriented filter and I hated it, there was no way to catch all the oil that went running down the side of the block and all over the steering rack.

You don't have oil spilling down side of your filter when you loosen it, all over your pan?

All I know is my oil change takes half the time and I don't spill any oil, love it. Oil filter is nearly half the cost too.

Nah man, I just break that filter loose enough so that I can turn it by hand, chop the bottom off a gallon milk jug (cap on of course) put it up over the filter then reach up around the filter with the other hand and spin it off till it drops into the carton with all the oil. Rag at the ready to wipe the mating surface so it doesn't drip and on with the new filter, $4 apiece for OEM when you buy a case of ten. Easy peasy. I'm done before I can even get a second sip of that beer I opened

Many ways to change the 2TR-FE oil filter without making a mess. A few drops are to be expected, it is an oil change after all. Maybe we should not hold onto the filter as the used oil drains out, this would keep it from running down our arm, yes? There are other discussion threads about this. Myself, I cut a piece of cardboard 10" x 6", wedge the short edge up behind the filter, crack it loose and let the excess oil drain down the cardboard to the drain pan. When the drip stops, carefully remove the filter and the cardboard. I rarely spill anything.
I prefer the vertical filter position in an inconvenient location over the V6 filter mounted nearly upside down in a very convenient spot. Yes the V6 filter specs an ADBV but it just takes one bit of debris or imperfect silicone piece and all the oil drains back to the pan. Dry start not good. But the filter location really is not that bad. Don't even need to jack up the truck to get access, just put down my favorite comfy dirty garage pad and slide under. Had too many other cars with horrible filter locations to even think of complaining about this one.

    Hi

Old thread I know, but I'm trying to see if this will work on a 3rz. Long story, trying to turbo swap into a 94 pickup. Got a turbo manifold for free that was a custom job for a 2rz, but it hits my oil filter housing. 2/3rz use different housings that are not interchangeable. I went to a local dealer to see if I could match this 2ge housing to my current housing and they couldn't find a part number for the part that bolts to the block. Anyone have a part number or specific year?

    thanks

    Daniel

I never thought about this - it sure looks like it does. I just did a part number inspection, the two o-ring gaskets are the same. As long as the bolt holes line-up you have a winner. If you have an oil cooler sandwiched between the bracket and oil filter, you wouldn't be able to utilize it.
If you want one shoot me your PayPal email and I'll send an invoice.

I did an oil change yesterday actually. I've been using a hose to drain the Fumoto valve on the cartridge but noticed yesterday that the oil might actually clear everything if I just open it up- it does! I drained both the same time into the same box :bananadance:

Other than that it was uneventful and a little boring, I didn't even finish my beer and it was done :bored:

This is funny, some of the V6 guys are adapting theirs so they can run a spin on filter.

Yeah I've seen that. I think there objective is to simplify to "unscrew and screw on" but then they run into the problem 2.7L guys have. I'm not a fan of removing the plug/o-ring and draining with the plastic nipple so found a way to add a Fumoto valve to drain it.
