Guys I know what this thread is all about getting more performance from the little 2TR.
But with All Do Respect, Why? I’m ready so fire away. :crapstorm:

I know I’m a Guinea pig for the new to be released Magnuson supercharger system and trust me it’s fine for a DD duties. It’s not going to shove you back in the seat but it does now have enough to get around. But as @Sscustoms said he was pulling a fully loaded load going around someone and his motor let go. (or some resemblance of that) Now there’s something to be said about diesels or cubic inches. I fully understand a big cast iron diesel on the noise of a Taco might be a stretch but with so many of you with the skills why not install an alloy block LS (awesome support with this motor) Coyote (reading this is only 2” taller then an LS) or even a Lexus V8? Again why so much time and money in something you only going to get so much out of it?
I’m much older than most here and some of you don’t know that the Ford Pinto & Mustang II (remember theses?) were the same under the outer sheet metal. In high school dear old dad was an Auto Bodyman. He/we purchased a Pinto hit in the front w/ less then a 1k miles for $700. He then found a Mustang II that went upside down into a Canal for $450 if memory serves me? The Mustang had a 302 and drive train w/ a stick & L/S diff. that would bolt into the Pinto. In the process of switching over the drive train we found that the 302 had water in it. Dad had a built *strong* 289 that he was going to make a hunting buggy with. Knowing the 289 was overkill for a hunting buggy we use the 4 banger from the Pinto for the buggy bolted to a 914 transaxle and put the 289 in the Pinto. Dad said FIRST F-ING SPEEDING TICKET YOUR WALKING UNDERSTAND? Boy was it fun in & just out of high school to be able to boil both 14” Maverick slotted mag wheels by just nailing the throttle with a big muffler from an big block LTD to keep it under the radar. Pinto’s & Mustang’s had 13” at the time. It was mine until one weekend I needed to use dad’s truck to move and left my Pinto with dad and my brother took it for a joy ride & rolled it. Mother F-er only got a few scratches.
Anyway back to the question at hand why when it would probably be less $$$ to install more cubic inches making more HP.
And yes I know a motor is electric and engine is what’s in the Tacoma but it’s habit.
    Now fire away :crapstorm:
*Edit* Sorry guys I forgot to add this link my apologies!

You and me both. I think I finally decided to do the TD05 instead of the holset for autocross purposes.

You won’t catch fire from me. I think one of the coolest Tacomas I’ve seen was swapped and has a full bronco front TTB grafted in from the firewall forward. But…. You ever seen someone buzzing around an open field with their remote controlled airplane? Seems pointless to me, but im sure it irons the kinks out of their twisted knickers from the work week. It makes that dude happy to spend $$$$$ on a remote controlled bumble bee just so he can crash it 3 times and do a full rebuild with new bling just so it can burn fuel on the weekends. I suppose its the same. Theres enough of us out there that gets a kick out of having this type of build, especially when it stomps another type of build, makes me happy at least. No one is ever impressed when its LS swapped. They all say “well yeah, if i had an V8 i could do that to” or “OH, that’s why” and is immediately less impressed, but when its a grocery getter 4 cylinder breathing fire there’s no excuse they are just impressed. And they say “NO WAY, thsts not a v8! that’s still a 4cylinder ”. At the end of the day it is STUPID to dedicate this level of funds to a hobby. But its also Stupid fun to not have the same Nestle chocolate chips in my cookie as everyone else. Kill the cookie cutter!

    Buddy,
Absolutely the last car I would purchase is a Tesla. No range to go anywhere and only 2 pedals below the steering wheel! I guess I’m still to young to drive an automatic transmission. It’s the reason I sold this below an purchased the five lug because the Pre-runner had a auto and the five lug has a stick.
Maybe I should have just added a Tremec to the Pre…

Oh, a little JB weld and the block should be good to go.

lol, I understand the Tesla opinion. It was an analogy aimed more about putting a stamp on go fast and how to get it rather than being unique.

Its better to just do it and find out. If it dont work you can always try the holset.

The only issue is the holset is twin scroll, so it requires a whole different header and tuning. It's a fairly significant financial investment related to go one way or the other.

The power is definitely a plus and that is what a lot of us desire, but its not the only reason for me. Ive had plenty people say drop an ls in it or why not the tdi. Plent of aftermarket support and proven to be powerhouses.
But this is not why i do it. I want to go a route that few people have taken. Build something that is different. I dont even know how many ls swaps ive seen, hell they have a celebration for ls swaps, but the 2tr is different. How many ls swapped vehicles probably over 1000 in idaho. How many turbo 2tr 2nd gen tacomas on tons. Maybe 2

Those twin scrolls are some bad momma jammers though. Less boost lag and usable boost through out the rpms. Tunes can be changed, turbo manifold can be a bitch.

I went with the holset because of the twin scroll. I'm just going with the TD05 for now for the instant boost response when autocrossing. The holset wouldn't hit peak boost until 3k nearly, the TD05 would hit it by 2k if I remember correctly.

Yep, I wanted to build a street truck initially, but then I realized what I'd be doing more often. And honestly the TD05 makes the same boost almost

Fucken nice sunlight window there. I had a isx 15 that windowed the block that. Drove the old girl in the shop spitting and puking oil and coolant. Pretty cool to watch the pistons going up in down.

Nailed it! Not to mention, when 2JZ engines were brand new…. They werent fast or super impressive. But look at what exploring and building the aftermarket support has done to that power plant… we might just be pioneering people doing 2TR swaps. They already do 3rz swaps, there are more than one 3rz 2rz 1000hp builds out there.

After a complete tear down and inspection i did notice something. Not a cause of failure but possibly a potential failure point. Ive pulled apart 3 engines so far. Both engines with 200k-220k main/rod bearings look flawless like new condition. The supercharged engine was not the same story, mains look good but the rods show accelerated wear on the top Bearings. Not blown out but almost slight discoloration as if low oiling. All crank main rod journals have good polishing still. In teardown of the oil pump and bypass valve it seems as though the bypass valve spring is pretty weak in my opinion. May need to install a washer for heavier bypass pressure. Beings we dont have an oil pressure gauge we would never know what the actual pressure is, or if it was presenting a problem.

Additionally, a small radius on the oil pump output port will help with volume/flow.

Are you running any type of oil cooler?
