mine only does it when i come to a much more harder stop than normal...if i don't allow enough braking distance, but it doesn't happen all the time...have almost 37k on mine now and sometimes learn to live with it but i have a lifetime warranty in case something happens anyhow...

Mine does it when cold but once you go a few miles it goes away. 57,000 miles on my 16 and the trans fluid level has been checked the correct way and is at the correct level.

Mine does it quite frequently - and not only when it's cold. I guess I can live with it...UNLESS of course there are long-term ill effects. Anecdotal evidence pertaining to other generations and / or other models isn't really all that convincing in my book....

2018 Tacoma Trd Pro. Exactly the same problem. I took it to the local dealership twice, nobody did anything, very disappointed! It’s my first Toyota.

It's the trans down shifting into first coming to a stop. When moving faster and then braking it down shifts faster causing the thud. Feels like you've been in a low speed accident where you were rear ended. Cold is worse, the whole truck shimmies and then to accelerate after there is a 1-2 second delay before it will shift. Toyota says it's normal, basically unless your truck catches on fire everything is a normal operation per Toyota. They may even say the fire, is operating as intended lol

Yes, OVTune is on my list...but it's certainly not a cheap fix for something that Toyota should handle....

    But toyota won't.
And it "fixes" a LOT more than this thud.
The truck drives like it should. Buttery smooth and powerful. And better mpg.

How do the Dakars fix it? I've had the dakars since way before the tune, and they def didn't make any change with the thud.

Hi, thanks for replying. Are you positive this ovtune can fix the issue? I look it up, it’s not a cheap mod, but I may go for it if it saves my future possible transmission problem and has other benefits. Thanks again

    Yes, i'm positive.
It fixes the thump, and SO much more.

But don't believe just me. Go to the thread and read about it for yourself. I know it's long, but I read almost the entire thread before I purchased.

Generally get one thump at the first or second stop before getting up to operating temp. Would it be worth going to OVTune for this?

I mean, just for that, IMO, not really. But it fixes a lot more than that.

That used to be attributed to underfilled ATF. With one of the AT coolers gone the middle of the last MY, underfilling should be less of an issue.

Still though, it would be good to check the level. The procedure has been posted around here a few times.

Thanks for that suggestions, I will do that next chance I get. @tonered

Just did some more testing and I can get it to clunk from coasting (aka neutral) to a dead stop.... So I am starting to think it may be the rear brake shoes. I don't see how the clunk would happen 1second after complete stop and body movement, and be the driveshaft or slip yoke making the noise. Of note, I can get it to clunk from first gear only as well.
