886 Backup light mod

Crappy pic, but you can see how much more light is thrown with these bulbs.

 

Well, I finally installed some 886's today.
Read about 'em in another post a year or so ago,
but bought the Cree LED's instead.
Found them to directional with little side lighting
Installed one 886 to compare to the Cree LED.
Wow, what a nasty, dingy yellow light in comparison, but BRIGHT !
Waited hours for dark. Just tried 'em out. What a difference.
Hafta do some research for cooler color 886's,
but this definitely solves the poor back up light problem.
Glad I did it, thanks for bringing up the subject again.

Just did mine today, what a great east mod. Gonna redo my vht tint and this time tape off the area of reverse lights. Awesome !

 

Yeah a cool white would be excellent. I'll research today and see if I can find some. This is on my "to do" list for my truck.

I've done a little research and found some interesting stuff at autolumination.com on their Headlight/Foglight Page.
Though they have a selectable color spectrum drop down menu for their lamps,
the wattage for the 800 Series, which includes the 866, is either 27w or (72w to) 100w.
Two 100 waltt lamps @ 12 volts is 16.66 amps and the 27 watt is probably to dim.
I didn't get around to covering that page in depth, though, and there may be a solution there.
And, I haven't dealt with that company, therefore can't recommend them, though I've seen the name on TW.
Also, all the major lamp manufacturers generally list the color temperatures in their Catalogs (for other than small lamps).
Again, haven't had the time to browse thru them.
I'll post anything I find, "When & If".

BTW, the BP866 lamps I bought were Wagner from NAPA Auto Parts.
They didn't list the wattage, but I'm assuming 35w or 50-55w.
And they don't look as yellowish when not compared to the Cree LED, obviously.

Just did this last night. Piece of cake and works great.
5 minute job.

 

4200°k to 5000°k = White
5500°k and up starts the Blue Spectrum
The 886 I installed is about 3200°k (I'm guessin') and quite yellow in comparison.
The Color Spectrum has little to do with the brightness, the Wattage does.

A little additional info that might be helpful.

Using 50w 886 bulbs for this mod results in a voltage drop in the stock circuit of 1.15 volts. Generally, a voltage drop of 10% or less is considered acceptable for most acccessories. While this drop is nothing to be concerned about, it does reduce the light output of the bulbs slightly. I wired mine using a relay, which was easy since I already have a heavy cable feed to the bed for my compressor.

It's slightly brighter, but nothing I could capture in a photo. I initially relayed one side and left the other on the stock harness, otherwise I wouldn't be able to tell so easily. It's not the relay you know, but the fact that the bulbs are powered by a larger gauge circuit. I used one of the backup light feeds to trigger the relay. You can get the voltage drop down to .18 volts by using 10ga wire to the relay mounted in the rear of the bed, and then 16ga from the relay to each light.

It's not something you have to do, but getting full voltage will deliver more light. In general, it's best to keep the loss below .5 volts to your lights. Since these are just backup lights though it's not as critical.

 

Just performed and snapped some comparison pics... I used Sylvannia 886's.

 

A blue coating on a halogen bulb filters the spectrum. It doesn't shift the color spectrum produced at the filament. The light gets cooler as you remove (filter) the warm portion of the output. So in the end you remove visible light from the equation.

But who cares. I could say it 1000 times until I'm blue in the face - LOL!

 

Just installed mine. Will have to see what they look at night, but I'm expecting great things just based on the pics people have posted. Thanks OP.

 

Did mine today using the Sylvannia 886's, I just used a big pair of dikes to cut the bulb off, worked super easy and quick.

Huge difference at night with having 15% tint, great cheap mod
