If his prior repairs shown up in the Toyota owners database but not in Carfax, is it the dealership’s fault or Toyota’s? Not sure who directly reports repairs to the DMV for Toyota, (DMV is the actual source that Carfax uses , not just self-reporting from repair facilities).

Misaligned bed and cab on mine - took two days and a free rental to fix it before I drive it home new.

The same dealership that uses Carfax as a tool to sell a car, knowingly repaired that car and did not report that work to Carfax...is sketchy to say the least.
That just re-affirms my belief that dealers are crooks.

You misunderstood my point and question- the repair was recorded by Toyota’s database, so who reports to DMV from there?

Carfax is a private company that gets its repair info from DMV’s and from other sources, repair shops don’t always have to report directly to Carfax.

But yeah, the sales department should be using Toyota’s database to sell cars. It’s a good lesson for the rest of us, always ask for both.

Just got back from dealership. They were able to give me more context on those repairs and previous owner and that they went above and beyond to satisfy some more nit picky requests from the previous owner that was an auto engineer.

3rd brake window: they referenced that it was a Toyota known issue. When repairing the leak they removed all carpeting, liners and headliner, scraped off and replaced insulation to appease the previous owner that there wasn't mold and then replaced with new.

As for the transmission, they replaced it entirely because previous owner wasn't happy with anything less. I personally have not had any issues to date.

They worked with me as I wanted to feel confortable with future issues because our plan is to keep this truck for a long time. They were able to get me a Toyota Platinum 10 year/125k warranty with $0 deductible down to $1500 from well over $2,000. I thought that was thoughtful and brings peace of mind for any issues for quite some time.

Thanks everyone today for your feedback and insight. Much appreciated!

You will have MAJOR problems with the truck since you bought a 2017 CONCRETE PRO truck.
Should have bought a CEMENT PRO truck. Much better and problem free.

I think this thread is a good lesson for some that are always quick to jump on the all dealerships are crooks bandwagon.

OP glad you got it worked out. Enjoy the truck.

I was the General Manager at a large multi line dealership. If the dealer did the repairs and knew of previous issues, they are required to disclose them (if asked). At the point of being asked they did not disclose, it is considered fraud. If the dealer did the reapirs it was up to them to input it into the Carfax system. Carfax is not very reliable since inclusion is voluntary.

That warranty can be purchased at some other Toyota dealers in the country for around $900 (dealer cost is around $600). They possibly made more money from the warranty than they did with the truck they sold you

^Ignorance is a bliss, isn't it? When you post a question on an Internet forum, you can't expect to only get answers you like to hear.

At what point should one disclose repairs? If you really worked at a multiline dealer you know that it's in your best interest to be quiet and make the sale. I sold a VW Jetta a few years ago that was stupid clean and the car spoke volumes for how well it was cared for. I sure wasn't going to disclose that two years earlier the head gasket had to be replaced because of an external oil leak between the block and the head. Some would have looked at it as a bonus since the timing belt, water pump, idler and tensioner and drive belt was replaced early. I'm sure others would have ran away screaming thinking the car was overheated.

My 2nd gen (last of the Commiefornia-built Tacos) got totaled before Christmas. Luckily I don't own the Fiat (half the stuff under the hood are labeled in Italian). It'll be someone else's problem soon enough.

    Working on them
The Only real Disclosure required to the DMV system (Where carfax get's their information) are Items that affects the Title of the Vehicle such as Accidents and Insurance related issues and that for the most come from Police Reports and Insurance Lost reports, Repair Shops that do Routine Repairs .... that is also what Car dealerships do they are not required to report any type of Mechanical repairs like warranty work or even if they changed the engine done to standards or not. CarFax Just Pulls the information from the DMV system that in some states you can do this yourself pain in the butt tho...So there is no requirement for the Dealership to say "Hey CarFax" we replaced the Transmission.. They can if they want but not required and they don't since that will cost money to have someone doing that.

Legally if asked you are required to disclose "known" issues. Why would you question my credentials? You know nothing of who I am.
