Hey all, what are your thoughts on this, 05 DBSB 240,000. 4x4 auto. 2 owner, 2nd purchased at 178,000.
    TRD w/ ARE Topper and
    ARB front Bumper and Winch
    Rock Sliders
    285X75X16 Dura Trac tires
    Lifted and leveled
OME rear springs and add a leaf kit
    Sway-Away Race Runner Shocks
    Sway-Away Sway bar up
    Camburg Upper Control Arms
    K&N Air Filter
    JBA Muffler
    MPF Trail Lights
This truck has been perfectly Always Synthetic oil changes.
Not local so a little traveling.

Has a timing chain, water pump hasn’t been done in awhile
Check engine is on, “diagnosed” for o2 sensor..
    Never been off roaded.

Talked down to 9500, maybe a little lower, throwing in a lot of truck accessories that aren’t transferable to their new vehicle.

    What do you think? Concerns

The timing chain and headgaskets are primary concerns. The chains stretch and cause issues at higher mileages, and the headgaskets fail causing misfires (check engine light).

I personally wouldn't touch a 05/06 unless its already had its overhaul, or that you are prepared to do so.

Far from heart set.. I’ve always shot for mileage around 80-130 but I bike almost everywhere & the truck will primarily be a commute to the camp spot/haul my mountain bike to trails and since I only put 2000 miles on the car in the last year I considered higher mileage. ...240 is a stretch which is why I’m bringing the convo to you trusted peeps

I've read about the headgasket issues in the 05-06 4.0 with pre 12/05 build dates but don't recall seeing any threads here on TW about the timing chains being an issue in the 4.0 any links? Thanks.

It has a winch and has never been off road?

You sure this is a Tacoma and not a Jeep?

So it's lifted but never been off-roaded?
    For what, looks?
Are you willing to take the owner's word for that?

I realize the following will be an unpopular opinion here...
But lifting changes the drive train and steering geometry.
I leave you to draw the obvious conclusion.
Have you looked up the service history using the VIN?

Has the frame been replaced? Rust?

As mentioned, the 2005 model year indicates it came with the problematic head gasket.
Build dates up to late 2005, affecting 2005 and early 2006 models.
(Mine was built 8/2006, has a new frame courtesy of Toyota).
Did I mention you should inspect for rust? :p

    AND...250k miles.
    I'd pass.

    [EDIT]
As mentioned, for your usage, a PreRunner shouldn't necessarily be excluded.
With the right tires, it would likely do.

You are almost describing my 05 truck to a tee. Lifted, locked, winched, sliders, skids, etc.

Except I am the original owner. No timing chain or head gasket issues.

Man I spent 7000cad on a 2010 with 70k miles on it. That’s not a good deal, they’re selling it for a premium for the addons. Would you pay that much for a stock one ?

    enough to have fun
take the plunge only if it has detailed records on maintenance and stuff.

I bought mine with 147k on it, and it now has 216k on it from a few years of an hour plus commute.

I've also done a ton of maintenance to keep it in tip top shape.

    170k - rear diff fliud 10/9/2016
    177k - new spark plugs 1/28/2017
183k - oil change (Mobil1) and tire rotation
183k - inner and outer tie rods 4/15/2017
    188293 - oil changed Mobil1
    189k - tires rotated
    192k - passenger side wheel bearing 8/13/2017
    193149 - oil changed - Mobil1
193331 - rotated tires, front pads and rotors
195899 - New carrier bearing and spicer U joints 10/7/2017
    196283 - balanced and rotated tires 10/13/2017
197520 - new OME 90021 shocks, new shoes and drums, brakes bled, rotated and balanced tires
    198242 - oil change - mobil 1
    200165 - Custom 1 piece driveshaft
    203856 - oil change - Mobil 1, rotated tires
    208923 - oil change - mobil 1
211569 - tires balanced and truck aligned
    211295 - New blower Resistor
213335 - truck aligned, new Centric Rotors
    213565 - oil change, Mobil 1, k&n oil filter
216059 - cleaned TB and MAF

And I still have maintenance to do. But I got truck with a brand new frame so at least I have that going for me lol

I know these trucks can last damn near forever. But to me there's too many unknowns for the price. The truck could end up being a dream. Which would be great!
But it could turn out yo be a $10,000 nightmare money pit! If you definitely don't need all the accessories that have been installed on the truck, why put yourself in the position of having to trust that they were properly installed and maintained.
Sounds like your overbuying what you really need.

Too much money for all the reasons listed. Those appear to be nice mods and the truck may be well taken care of...but 250k is 250k. For 10k it needs to be a no excuses truck, and the CEL not being fixed suggests other things are being or have been ignored. O2 sensors are fairly cheap.

Yeah but it's relative though, the second gen Tacoma can go a hell of a lot further and longer than like say an ford F-150.

I would try to talk him down a little bit more but I imagine they probably won't if the truck is in immaculate condition.

I would take that money and go and buy a first gen.

yeah I mostly agree as well, if she was an immaculate condition physically cosmetically and mechanically than I would say go for it.

All older 2005-2011's we see the chains stretch and tensioners fail, google "p0016 tacoma"

Edit, this is due to wear, not a common fault point
