I know nothing about how the ECU "learns" but was proven in the HP Tuners thread that the 2012-15 Tacomas have softer throttle, fuel and ignition mapping than the earlier trucks. When I HP Tuned my lifted, armored, bigger tired 2014, it felt at least as lively as my wife's stock 2006 but was an absolute dog before it. HP Tuners is worth the money!

I don't know if there's a difference between pulling the ground strap off of the battery and waiting x number of mins. or doing what follows:

    From toyotanation.com - Dealer tech

Disconnect the battery ground and wait 10 seconds. Touch the ground to the positive and hold there for 10 seconds. Wait 5 minutes. Repeat the ground to positive for 10 seconds and then reconnect. This puts it into learn mode. Take it on an aggressive test drive on a freeway.

From tacomaworld.com - Dealer tech - did not agree with the "aggressive test drive" mentioned above. Here are his comments:

Doing the battery cable stuff will erase the memory, but you don't want to do an aggressive test drive. You want to let it warm up fully after starting, then drive with light to more moderate throttle in a stop & go pattern. Like a neighborhood. This allows the ecu to learn how much time is needed to shift each gear as it compensates for wear in the transmission. After about 10 miles, you're done. Then you can drive how you please. You never want hard throttle during any relearn because all memory has been erased, shifting, knock learn, ignition timing, fuel trim. Everything's been set to base setting & hard throttle will not learn anything because it's going to max out all values to produce maximum engine torque.

In cases where the battery cables are not long enough to reach one another, a jumper wire may need to be connected.

"It is how fast you speed up" - Exactly what I am experiencing.
"If you want your shift points to be more aggressive , you will have to dig into the gas pedal for a while" - And that is exactly what I am doing and as of today I am starting to notice a bit of a difference in how it shifts. I am going to continue this pattern for awhile.

The ECU doesn’t adapt to you, only a set of parameters that it’s given. More fuel, air, etc it adjusts.

A lot of owners think Tacoma’s have some kind of built in AI, that’s not the case.

But if the parameters change, doesn't it adjust over time?

On the Ford I have when you disconnect the battery, there is a tech pub that states to expect some rough shifts until it relearns. And that is every time you disconnect the battery. I have experienced this first hand. It states that it takes about 250 to 500 miles to settle in the fuel/air/timing according to how it is driven.

From the 3rd Gen gurus and OVTune guys and everything I’ve read is there’s like three sets of parameters the ECU can use, just depends on the input (mostly the gas pedal). It’s constantly changing, it doesn’t remember you, per se.

I think we are speaking the same language. I know it doesn't remember me. But it remembers or adjusts to how it is driven.

Yes, but I think it does it pretty fast.

Right. It is basically only my fifth day of owning it and driving it daily.

Mr. Literal is here to save the day. Obviously the truck doesn’t acknowledge a human specifically by name...
