Ok just making sure I had the correct definition/process understanding for TSB vs. Recall.

Someone? They'd probably need multiple deaths in order to actually issue a recall. That's why I said, it wouldn't surprise me one bit that Toyota will never issue a recall for this. "If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense"-DJ Quik

I just found in another thread that it's part number 90919-05089.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2016-tacoma-crankshaft-sensor-issue.446186/page-4#post-13029776

Location is "Passenger wheel well, move the rear rubber flap between the body and frame, look towards the back of the motor, follow a wire harness down and you'll see the silver 10mm bolt holding it in. takes just a few minutes"
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2016-tacoma-crankshaft-sensor-issue.446186/page-4#post-13029679

I plan to check mine tonight to see if it's the revised part or the original part. I'll replace myself if it's the original part.

One 10mm bolt holds it in. easy to remove if the engine isn't hot.
The connector has a large rubber boot that makes it fun to disconnect. I believe the release tab on the harness faces towards the back of the truck.

A simple 10mm socket on a 1/4" drive ratchet should do it.
No need to pull the battery, just unbolt, unplug, and reverse. Just dont try it on a hot engine unless you need to, no reset procedures or anything required.
You wont lose oil or anything. Passenger wheel well, move the rear rubber flap between the body and frame, look towards the back of the motor, follow a wire harness down and you'll see the silver 10mm bolt holding it in. Takes just a few minutes

I'm tempted to buy one of these parts along with maybe a shitty 10mm socket wrench (maybe from harbor freight?), keep in glovebox in case it breaks down when I'm in the sticks. Or just replace in advance...

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. Man I REALLY don't want to dump any more money into this truck that Toyota should be paying to fix...

Not to mention that you don't have to wait for the truck to cool down to replace it.

I bet a smart person wrote this.
    Oh, nope.
    It was me.

Pics attached of where it is located.

Please note: NOT HAVING THE MARKING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SENSOR DOES NOT INDICATE YOURS WILL FAIL. it may. It may not. I didnt design it, produce it, or figure out what goes wrong with them. I only know that the "new improved ones" have the small mark shown in my easier post.

I'm just a toyota tech, don't hold me responsible if this doesn't fix your vehicle or a dealer doesn't want to cover replacment of it if you don't find the mark on it.
We have to see the problem to consider replacing parts. Few dealers will just do it because you said so.. But now that it's becomming more known.. It shouldn't really be an issue for them.

I could go on and on as to why you can't just demand new parts. Put simply: thats just not how it works.

I could be responding to the same person from a different thread but......

Heat may be a false correlation. More units might be failing not because more trucks were delivered and used from the first of the year. My truck failed with NO correlation to heat. 70 degrees, 2 mile drive, cool off for twenty minutes for breakfast, failed pulling into heavy traffic (uphill) at 15 mph. Miles on truck 2200. I don't think placement is the issue. Design could be, but another user reports a replacement part with a mark that are the 'good' ones as 'they got a bad batch.'

At least one user has had two fail. No word if the second was a 'good' part.....

Someone needs to combine these threads if we are going to create a useful base of information.

Bought mine in November and put 19,300 miles on without a hint of issues with the CPS. Then bam. I'm sitting at a red light holding up traffic.

Ok they are susceptible to heat but that isn't the only thing to make them fail and not every one is failing. I'll ammend my statement then to those with the questionable part may be more likely to fail if subjected to extreme heat.

Read up on the different types of crank position sensors, how they work, symptoms to failure and causes; heat and age are the most prevalent but not the only cause. Yours obviously failed when it wasn't hot.

Tacomas are not the only vehicle to use CPS so there could be other Toyota models or brand of vehicle having problems with this but not logging into a tacoma website to report their issue.

If I recall you have to have the UltraGuage MX to get the codes. The base UG will not show temp, but the upgraded one will if I remember correctly

I posted this in the thread with the diff problems... but everyone should do it for the CPS issues as well... this is not an issue of rubber seals or sounds from an a-arm... this is a safety concern with very bad results if it happens while driving...

Please, do yourself, and everyone else, a favor and log a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

    https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

It is the only way for these problems to be raised and pushed to be made recalls... everyone that is experiencing these issues should file a claim. Only way to push Toyota to handle this as a recall instead of a TSB...

Jason, I think you mentioned in another thread perhaps tracking "where the vehicle owner lives" Might be worth a shot to also track "where the vehicle was assembled" Wonder if lot numbers/assy locales might be playing a contributing role here.

I just checked mine with a March 2016 build date in Mexico. No grid marks and no issues so far.20160818_193920-1.jpg

Weird it looks different than the others. Black instead of metal/silver
