Mythbusters tested it and their mileage went down.

Here's a way to test it without risking your vehicle and it's paint:
Try it in a gas-powered generator. The engine speed is constant so there's not any variability due to driver influence or road conditions. Measure the time it takes the generator to run out of gas. Do a couple of runs as a control with plain gasoline to measure how long it takes the generator to run out. You'll want a couple of samples of each to average it out due to slight differences in the amount of gas loaded. Then, run a couple of acetone loads through it to see if there is any benefit (generator runs 30% longer). Then run a couple of regular gasoline loads through it and see if the generator still runs as efficiently (cleaned out). If it runs better after the acetone but drops down again when loaded with straight gas, then it's possible it's doing something to the gasoline. If it continues to run well with straight gasoline, it was probably a cleaning issue.

I ran it in my car for awhile & it avg'd about 60 miles more a tank (14 gallon tank) with it vs. without it. I live in a metro area where they fuck us 10% on ethanol. Talk about a myth bustin needed, ethanol does not help mpg, it helps food prices go up due to the pressures on corn supplies which also increases food prices for livestock then the prices at the grocery store go up. Let me see, more mileage without it so the gas doesn't go as fast vs. more frequent fillups with ethanol added = no more bad fumes for the atmosphere so it's just propaganda to get all of us to reach farther into our pockets more often due to supply issues with ethanol on top of supply issues of gasoline. Just more reasons for gas prices at the pump to be more unstable more often. Complete bullshit! Can't wait til we move to our new house because ethanol free gas is 7 miles down the road in a county that's 2 counties away from the metro county which means they don't put ethanol in the gas there. I basically stopped using acetone due to the risk to the paint gettin in there & the hassle of having it available when filling up, just wasn't worth it.

Check out the link i posted originally. It says a guy tried soaking the various o rings, etc in jars of gas, and acetone mixtures. If I read it correctly, the acetone DID cause the parts to swell slightly but within standard measures.

as an update, I purchased a bottle of pure acetone (no dilution or any other solvents) today from home depot and as soon as drive home I will try it out on a tank and compare it to my normal mileage when I drive home.

if it does work i'm planning on buying a few fuel supplement/octane booster bottles and refilling them with the right amount of acetone. On this note, does anyone know if fuel supplements/octane booster are as corrosive as acetone and will allow protection to store it in?

I tried this a few years back when my daily driver with a V8 gas hog. I didn't notice much......if any difference. There are a few websites that are VERY convincing with this topic, but again, I tried it and I got the big FAIL!

Ok to try and revive this dead thread, i was planning one testing it on my ride home tomorrow for spring break. Earlier this week with all the snow I scrapped the idea cuz of cold. But now It back into the 60s so I'm going to give it a whirl. I am also hauling 5 extra alloy rims, one fit with a tire. I'm running it against my old average of 22.4 mpg on my return trip for fall break. Not sure if the rims loaded up with hurt my mpg more but we'll see!

So i decided EFF it, I'm going to test it myself. I got INSANE mileage on my trip home. I am at 1/4 of a tank and over 370 miles. I'll have to wait to fill up to get specific numbers but I will keep you posted

Well, if you're at 1/4 tank (15.75 gallons used) at 370 miles that would make your MPG about 23.5 mpg. Not exactly earth shattering for a 4 cylinder.

I've read of some getting 30-32 mpg:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/4-cylinder/13149-30mpgs-i4-auto.html

How much acetone did you put in?

Now I'm at about 1/8 with 397.5 miles. I put in 3.8 ounces of acetone when I filled up 13.4 gallons of gas. I'll prob fill up tomorrow and get some concrete figures

Ok I filled at 424.4 putting in 17.160 gallons equaling 24.7 mpg. Not unheard of for 4 bangers but unheard of for MY four banger. Ran one take with just plain premium and got less than 22mpg, next tank was seafoam and got same mileage. Just throwing my figures out there and I got about 10% better mileage with acetone. Take it or leave it!
