This automatic sway bar disconnect is a feature that is included from the factory on Wrangler Rubicons. If you talk to the guys that wheel their Rubicon's they don't like it because it doesn't completely disconnect the bar. I've always used quick disconnect links on the Jeeps that I owned and it was really easy to just get out of the vehicle and disconnect manually and they were cheap

Myself and a good friend who has a lot of fab experience came up with a different idea of how to do a sway bar disconnect. It would work for sure. We just haven't tried to make it

Yeah I'm sure we would. Pretty simple design actually. Maybe we can work on it over this coming winter.

My idea was to cut the sway in half, put a CrMo sleeve over the cut, weld one side, then drill through the sleeve and sway on the other side for a hardened pin to go through. Might need a plug or something if the sway bar is hollow, and maybe weld a ring on the inside and outside to keep them together, But it would be cheap and simple enough to pull the pin when you want to disco.

You also have to keep re-attaching it back in place in mind. The detachable link setup for Jeeps can be really challenging. It often requires a hammer and very level ground with a much larger, tapered pin than the one that would work on the Taco's SB. It'd take some doing to get the bar aligned and the pin back into the bar when you're ready to take it home.

Or do a manual version of the Rubi disco. Figure out how to hard core attach mongo plates to the ends of both sides of the cut bar. Then you could make the plates and pins as heavy duty as you'd like instead of having the pin size being limited by the diameter of the SB. Plates would make it easier to align when reattaching as you could see where both holes needed to be.

Oh yeah, one other thought. The E-Disco only disconnects on one side while the other remains fixed to the jeep.

Have you seen these dual rate SBs? http://www.teraflex.biz/jk-dual-rate-swaybar-4-6.html
They have two torsion bars, one riding inside the other. Yo go from stock rate to lighter rate with the flip of a switch or lever. I've spent a great deal of time looking up at the bottom of my Jeep and no time looking up at my Taco so I don't really have an idea what might work under there.

Remember guys, the tacoma sway bar isn't straight. There's nowhere you can cut it, capture the end, and let the ends rotate from one another while attached - least of all the middle.

What about a spring on the pin with a small cable with on ring on the end. Pull the cable to release the bar and have a place to hold the ring and release the ring to have the spring set the sway bar back in place. This could be put in the front of the truck with easy access for all.

This makes it sound like the best route would be link disconnects at each wheel. I need to start doing some mods so I have a reason to crawl underneath there and look for myself.

In my experience the Taco sway bar is pretty soft, at least on the TRD OR. I can insert/remove links by hand with only one corner of the vehicle jacked up.
