This is how I want my grill to look. Do you think I can do it myself? I'm seriously thinking of trying it.

Absolutely. I had never spray painted anything prior to doing my grill. I followed OPs guide and used scotchbrite pads, adhesion promoter, and flat black spraypaint. Then I used a flat clearcoat.

I'm going to do it. Not right now, but I'll post my results when I do.

My sincere thanks to @3dBdown for starting this thread and documenting his process. After some life delays I finally got around to painting my Sport grill black with MGM trim. I purchased the same products, followed his methods and the results turned out great. I am very pleased.

    Pics or it didn't happen...

Looks great. Added your pic to the OP. Also, nice looking truck! Something about the access cab stance makes it the most truck looking of all the configs.

Thanks 3dB! I like the look of the access cab too, plus it fits my needs better than the double cab.

And thanks once again for your detailed write-up. It really removed the unknown fear from the project.

I have a MGM Sport. Thinking of using this method, only using the color matched MGM spray paint on the chrome grill. I like the look of the chrome surround so plan on leaving that as is. Already ordered supplies, along with 2 stage clear coat and respirator.

I tried Plastidip and did not like it and questioned its durability against bugs and such.

That should look great. Glad to hear you ordered the respirator. Like the OP said, that 2 part clear coat is powerfully nasty stuff.

Looking forward to pics of your results!

Mannn, all these grills look great!
I'm tempted to give it a shot myself.

Sanded, cleaned, adhesion promoter (2 coats). Just finished 3 coats color matched MGM to grill. Masking up like Walter White to do 5 coats clear.20160703_155939.jpg

Nice! Glad you got the mask. That clear coat is the nastiest stuff I've sprayed.

    (I'm biased, but MGM rules.)

Finished. I like this method much better than Plasti-Dip. Very happy with how it came out. My grill woes are nevermore.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/bbp-color-keyed-grille-mod.398636/page-9

I sanded the grill taking time to get in all the small openings....then wiped it down with SD alcohol.
2 coats of adhesion promoter (5 minutes between and 10 minutes drying before adding color)
3 coats of color matched MGM (5 minutes between coats, 10 minutes drying before adding clear coat)
5 coats of 2 stage clear coat, wearing a respirator or death was a possibility....5 minutes between coats.

Very happy with how it came out.
