I'm just wondering, I am currently going to install 32's and was wondering if I can match this for a spare in the factory location underneath.

    Thx for your input

265/70/17 or 265/75/16 is the biggest you can fit without bending or cutting the tabs.

265/70/17 isn't that a 31.5 inch tire? Also if bending tabs it will fit bigger? It wont affect axle articulation will it.
    Thx

a little over. 31.6" or so. Are you using a 15" wheel? I don't think that fits a 2nd gen. Closes to 32" would be 275's and that would put you a little over 32". With 285's it's really close to the axle. I'm guessing as long as it doesn't touch you should be fine unless you're doing some serious flexing.

Tire size I'm doing is 255/75/17 Destination MT's studded. I do live in snow country for 4 solid months and skinnier is better in snow. I travel down logging roads and there not always in the best of shape.

Spose best thing to do is just try to fit it up.

    Thx

It also depends on the tires. MT's have more thread but I think that should fit without bending the tabs.

    BTW, welcome to TW.

I fit my 285-75-16 under the truck. No modifications to make it fit. At first it fit a little loose, so I flipped it so that the valve stem was facing down, deflated it, hoisted it up all the way, then inflated it to max sidewall psi. It fits snug now.

That is a good idea, every once in a while I can hear a rattle down there then I know the spare needs more air.

And THX driver for the welcome!

I've been pleased w/ their performance so far. Obviously I don't get much winter driving in my area, but I did have a chance to try them in icy conditions very recently and they acquitted themselves quite nicely in both my truck and in 265/70R17 on my wife's 4Runner:

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/off-roading-trails/304306-big-bend-adventure.html

I am NOT advocating them for a dedicated winter tire, but I was impressed with their performance none the less....

I had no problem fitting BFG MT 255-75-17 under mine, on a stock TRD Sport rim.

You might want to drop that spare down and flip it/rotate it once in a while. I'm betting with that size your pressing up hard against the tabs and eventually you'll wear permanent intentations into the sidewalls... especially if your taking them up to the max sidewall psi.

Got a 255/75 17 on a FJ steel wheel and it fits perfectly up in there.

Im running the same tyre as a spare for my 275 70 17s. Overall same diameter. Dont know you will get much anything bigger to fit that that.

Well my guess would be if you have no issues doing it with the FJ wheel. I will be fine using the stock tacoma steelie with that tire.

I fit a 285/70/17 by bending the tabs with a big hammer. There's just barely enough clearance for the axle. You just have to hold the tire back towards the tow hitch when raising so that it clears. I don't have a pic of the axle clearance.
