I had it done while doing my lift. Charger me a 100 bucks extra if I did it while lift was being done

Hey Guys- the more and more I research things, the more it seems people stay away from the 5/6th notches saying it rides harsh. Or they regret going at the highest notches. Only a few like @oscolivar1 seem to like it. Marie from HS also said she hears this a lot and advised against it. Is it really that bad? Is the 4/5th notch a good compromise? It seems to me that Bilstein made these in anticipation that people would run them at any of the notches, so wouldn't they make sure it was a decent ride throughout the range?

I had this combo on my second gen. I was on top setting on both side with a spacer on the driver side to help with the lean and Dakar leafs in the back. I traded in my truck for a 3rd gen and moved the whole setup over. Still on top settings with a spacer. The ride is stiffer than stock but smoother over bumps. I took off the sway bar on both trucks. It had a lot more body roll on the 2nd gen than the 3rd gen. I do light offroading and so far have no problems. I have no rubbing with 285s and have not cut anything.

I have a buddy with 2nd gen shocks on a 3rd gen, on 4 notch both side with a spacer on the driver side, add a leaf in the rear. He has 285s, but rubs a lot on the fender plastic in the front. Truck rides about the same as my truck. Front sway bar is still in, truck feels planted taking corners hard.

Thanks. If one wanted to "play it safe" in terms of a compromise with a harsh ride but still a decent lift (1.5") is 4/5 the way to go? The problem is, I don't really know what people deem harsh. Its possible I would ride in a 5/6 setup and think its completely fine.

Harsh ride depends on the driver and what you have on the truck. I've had no complaints from passengers. I came from lowered cars so this is riding on clouds for me. You can always try the lower setting and see how you like it first. It is a pain in the ass to move the clip though.

Hey Everyone. Are the 6112s the same length as stock bilstein OR suspension? Or are they the same size and the lift comes from a stiffer spring / preloading it?

Longer, have more travel, heavier springs, and much larger diameter. They aren’t even in the same ballpark to be honest.

Thanks. I'm asking, because I read a thread where the TRD PRO Fox suspension and stock OR suspension measured the same length side by side. Another thread, someone put the 5100 with 887 next to a stock OR shock and it was the same length. I was assuming people got their lifts from the springs with those setups?

If you look at the "old vs new" pic in this thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-bilstein-6112-5160-review.456173/

It looks to be only slightly longer (if you can imagine both of them being aligned to each other at the bottom)

The lift does come from preloading the spring but the spring has a lower rate and is constant so combined with the additional damping it does not provide the rough ride associated with preloading the factory spring which is progressive in addition to being a higher rate.

Thanks, so then the actual shock assembly is the same length? One poster said the 6112 is longer

Don’t quote me but I’m fairly confident the 6112 has a 1/2” longer stroke. Other components will be limiting travel though.

So if anything just a tad longer.

I’m on the top setting and it rides like a jewel on and off road. It’s a bit stiffer on road, but in a good way. The stock OR suspension is mushy.

I’ve ran other types of lifts to include spacer lifts. This is hands down one of my favorites. 5/6 no regrets

You run Dakars too right? Medium? And are you way higher in the back? I might start at 4/5th for now so wondering if the Dakars medium would be too high?

Haha yeah. I already ordered everything but just wondering if I should have bought the Dakars mediums instead of AAL. I will be running the 6112 at 4/5th notch so wondering how ass high I’d be.

Installed mine to topped out at 5/6th notch and med Dakar pack 095r. Measurements right before and after:

    Prelift measurements (hub to fender)
    DR 22”
    PR 22”
    DF 20.5”
    PF 20.5”

    Postlift measurements (hub to fender)
    DR 24”
    PR 24”
    DF 22.5”
    DF 22.5”

Appears to be same rake as factory but to me back was a bit too high(or low in front). After two months rear has settled to be less obvious a rake/closer to level. Looking good now so glad I went Dakar full new leafs. With any weight in the bed truck should stay nice and level.

I do wish the front had the ability to go a bit higher though. Don’t like to be topped out with no option for increase. In the event I get HD Dakar add on might have to address front height with either different setup entirely or as others have mentioned a set of eibach spring replacements.

Edit: Def a stiff(er) road ride especially at first. For the best though as the stock OR ride is way to floaty. Speed bumps are a breeze now.

Awesome man thanks. So on the 4/5th notch would it look like too much rake? I like factory rake but don’t want it ridiculous.

No lean; no driveshaft vibes. I’d be very happy.
