ABS definitely feels different than what most expect from commercials.
They show a car braking hard on a wet, water logged road and the driver calmly steering through the wet turn.
In reality, what it feels like is you have mashed the pedal to the floor and the metal sled you are in is not stopping fast enough to press you into your seat belt.
Sure you can turn, but in most cases the only distance reduction you are concerned about is STRAIGHT AHEAD

Believe me I know how it sounds! When I initially pressed on the brakes I had plenty of distance between me and the cars ahead and it was normal pressure applied to the brake pedal, the pedal was stiff and I had NO braking power, then as all the cars ahead were braking and I had none I closed on them very quickly and all I could do is dodge cars until I had no out. It's driving me crazy!

the Pre collision alert would have popped up if the system did not think you were already braking, so that is something to consider.
at least on the 2020+ there is a log that can be printed out of every single 'trip' (engine started, wheels moved) your truck has taken and any anomaly codes that occurred.
Dealership wouldn't let me keep a copy for whatever reason, but it was detailed enough to include throttle and gear shift events.

Mine is a 2017 Pro, it doesn't have pre-collision alert. I'm having it towed to the dealership tomorrow. I haven't even driven it or tested the brakes since the accident. After the collision, I drove it about 5 mph for about 50 yards to get it off the freeway and was able to stop and then had it towed home.

I used to think things were impossible until I saw some real strange things demo'ed and experienced. I then changed my tune and say things may seem impossible but may have been exactly what happened. I say they happen and try to figure out the why or if it did really happen for another reason. You know what I mean :D

Mods, pedal blocked, wrong pedal, truck lost power, brakes changed, etc are all good ideas as well as if Toyota can see data? Overall, it was an accident you all walked away from. That's #1

Can anyone, besides Toyota pull the event data, maybe your insurance company knows who can ? Letting a Toyota dealer is like the fox guarding the hen house...

I was thinking the same but there were no injuries and I just want the problem fixed.
It seems to me if Toyota finds something and then pretend there's no problem and lets me drive it away with no repair/replacements and someone is killed then they WOULD have a major liability on their hands.

Curious what/if they will find as this sounds exactly like what my truck did the other day. I was lucky no one was in front of me though.

So all of a sudden, intermittent / un-repeatable brake failures are common with 3rd Gen Tacos? This makes no sense at all. I am really interested in what the OP hears from the dealership!

I tried to pop the hood this morning to inspect booster, fuse, wiring etc. and it's not going to open. The grill is completely gone so I can see the latch and bracket and there's no way it going to open. So change of plans, it's going to collision shop first and I'll see if they can tell me anything. After repairs, I'll take it to the dealership. I have unlimited towing, so It's being towed to shop and I'll have it towed to Tacoma dealer after collision shop is done.

Data belongs to the vehicle owner. Insurance company can use a 3rd party vendor to retrieve the data with the owner's permission, or with a subpoena.

IMHO if you are trying to sort out the cause, you do not want someone else touching it until the data is pulled. That's just me though. Anything beyond this, the story can get muddy.

At least have a conversation with your insurance before you have anyone touch anything. Again, just my opinion.

I left a message with the clam agent and waiting for him to get back to me. For sure, I'm going to talk with him about it.

    Thanks

I did not know that some of these trucks have something different than the old-school vacuum assist power brakes.

The ones with crawl control have the electric assist.
