Yesterday morning I pulled my 2012 Tacoma DCSB OR with 35k miles out of the garage and made it about 2 miles down the road when the Check Engine and Trac Off lights lit up.

It put the truck into limp mode, limiting the speed to 40-45 mph. The dealership was about 7 miles away so I took a chance and drove it there.

Upon arrival, they found code P2442. The mechanic found that moisture had gotten into the air injection pump and corroded the stitching valve. They replaced the air injection pump and switching valve.

This was covered under the 8 year/80,000 mile emissions warranty so the nearly $1600 bill is on Toyota.

They did have to keep my truck over night and gave me a loaner with no cost or hassle. The replacement parts arrived this morning and I picked my truck up around 1pm this afternoon.

This is apparently a huge and common problem with the Tundras, but the Shop Manager told me this is the first Tacoma they have had with this problem.

Thanks for the heads up on the bypass. While I didn't have a chance to compare the older design to the newer one, I feel confident that it won't happen again. I'm considering trading for a '16 or '17.

If you don't trade and it fails again there is a nice warranty for the pump but from what I've read, I can't find someone with a 2nd failed pump yet on our tacos.

I know the new pump is designed differently, but I don't know exactly how. I didn't see the old one that was taken out.

When I had the rear brakes replaced for squeaking, the differences were so minimal, and the pad matieral was changed, but visually looked the same. I've not had them squeak one time since it was done though.

Old thread, but mine did it today, 35000 miles. They are telling me it does not fall under emissions and because I am past 36 months it's going to be on me for $1800.
They are going to check with Toyota to see if they will "goodwill" warranty it.

If it is emissions related they don't have a choice. Try to contact corporate and try another dealer that is familiar with the emissions warranty bs.

Yeah, that is my plan. They said there wasn't a person to contact today for warranty work (Saturday). They will call me next week. I'm out of town now anyway. And I assume they will have to order parts.

Can you possibly provide the name of your dealership and the person you worked with? My Tacoma is currently in the shop. So what is it??? is it covered under warranty or not? If it is, then why are only some dealerships honoring it? If you can tell me exactly what warranty it would be covered under that would help my case.

For me it falls under the 3 year 36k mile warranty, I was told in cali only it is included in the 7 or 8 year emissions warranty. I am still waiting for parts.

Your thread mentioned it was covered under This was covered under the 8 year/80,000 mile emissions warranty? would that also apply as mine is a few miles short of 60k miles. This is ridiculous, costly, and embarrassing for Toyota to put out a product that does this to the people that buy their trucks.

I was told, and it is also in the warranty booklet the 8 years is only for people who live in California. Have you taken it to the dealer and had it denied yet?

They first told me it was covered, then the guy called me back and said it wasn't. I live in Portland, OR. I am furious and getting more mad by the minute reading about how this has been an issue with Sequioas, Tundras, and now in Tacomas. This is not just a coincidence. This is a crappy part/product that obviously is not meant to last. This is costly. If I was over 150k miles and was told about this, I might understand. But just barely over 50k??? I expect way much more from the Toyota brand. My 1998 taco never had any problems! They just don't make them like they used to. The dealership is now looking into getting an exception made.

They said they are going to cover mine, I am going tomorrow to have it done. We will see.

Maybe Toyota will ok it for you. If not call the 800 number and start a case. I know how you feel, I was ready to trade if they didn't cover it. This is my 3rd tacoma and would be my last over this if they don't cover it.

You are a lot closer to cali than me, maybe take it to a cali dealer?

Thing is, you if trade it in, they win. That is exactly what they want people to do. Generates more sales and they can fix it for next to nothing and then sell it for a ton. What is this 800 number you speak of. So annoyed!

I wonder if it would work that way if i took to a cali dealer? The time off of work and cost to drive it there would be just as much as the repairs. lol

Yeah, but I wouldn't trade for another toyota, it would be my last one ever. They wouldn't win by me. I had a VW we bought new in 2001, had issues, will never own another VW.

Be cool, don't get mad, just tell them you love your tacoma, you have had several toyota's, you feel this is a factory defect and you are disappointed about this issue, you feel they are a better company than this. You feel they should make it right.

Wait until the dealer gets an answer. If you have any relationship with them they may help you out. I have heard of some offering to split the cost, or some have had the customer only pay the labor. Wait and see what they tell you.
