I have a 09 trd sport and while driving home today my check engine and trac. control lights came on. I put gas in it last night but that is the only thing that has happened recently. The truck is lifted and has one size taller tires . The lift has been on the truck for over a year with no issues anyone have any ideas?

Traction light comes on with engine light as a secondary indicator.

It's a check engine light, you can have it scanned at a parts store, or buy a scanner, or have it diagnosed professionally.

First step is check to see if the gas cap is secured.

Check the gas cap first. Clean and make sure it is fully seated.

Check code second and post back.

Went to the dealer and this what the light was on for. They changed the oil and said if the light comes back on then the engine will Have to be taken apart.

Check the filters for the OCV and clean and replace them as needed. If they are plugged the VVT will not work properly.

Keep an eye on the oil level. If the engine is consuming some oil and the level gets low it can cause vvt performance issues like this

It's a stretched timing chain. Hope it stays away for the time being!

I’m going to drive it and see what happens. If the light comes back on then the engine will come apart and whatever needs to be fixed will be. Thank you for the advice. I am thinking just a typical faulty sensor

The lights came back on last week and it is going back to the shop as soon as they get me a Tacoma to replace mine when it is in the shop. The truck is sitting in the driveway waiting to get fixed. Back to driving the F-350 for a while.

Sorry to reopen an old thread, but what did the dealer do to fix the issue? Was it the Timing Chain or Coil Packs?

If you have a skip at 1400 rpms and again at 1800 rpms like I did after the light goes out it is an oil control valve. THis was an ongoing problem because the dealer could not find any codes both times it was in the shop. Jimmyh was on the money with his diagnosis. It was the oil control valve on the left bank that was bad. It was a chore dealing with the dealer because they only have techs not mechanics . By that I mean someone that can plug a computer into the car and say yes I see a code but don’t have a clue how to fix it because I’m a parts changer only and can only replace what the computer said . Since this incident I have purchased a computer and do all my own work. I am done dealing with dealers and the lack of knowledge they have to work on vehicles.

The tech sent me a video of my driveshaft spinning and said I had a vibration and that was my issue. I guess he didn’t have a clue what the difference was between a drivetrain vibration and a skip in the engine. When I asked him to explain to me why he thought that was the problem and his reasoning for that diagnosis he couldn’t and got mad and walked away from me. It took me three trips and two months to get the service department to get this issue fixed.

I appreciate the help issue was resolved. It was the VVT. Thank you to Jimmyh for hitting a home run with the correct diagnosis of the problem. The dealer didn’t have a clue what the problem was. If they can’t hook a computer up and get a code it means nothing is wrong and send you on your way. So now I’m back to working on my vehicles myself.

Thank you everyone for the posts. Today I had the check engine light and traction control light appear on my 2010 Tacoma. Swung by autozone for a code check and the only thing that came up was a loose gas cap. Gave it an extra quarter turn, removed the positive battery cable for a few minutes to reset the lights. Good as new. Thanks every one.

By skip, do you mean more of a sputter?
I just got a SC installed on my truck now Im at 1500 miles and might light just came on. I noticed at lower speeds and RPM there was a tiny flutter in the powerband. Would this be that same issue? Thanks
