I saw a video recently of a Toyota master tech remarking on how few people had actually taken one of those apart: they’re just that good.

Same thing happened to my BF's 2017 Tacoma. Bought it as a lease return in 2021ish, and now in 2024, engine is toast. he took great care of it, serviced it on schedule and did not put that many miles on it. He thought this would be his truck for a long time but now has to get another one. He was going to retire but now has to work at least another year just to pay for another truck. Toyota should be sued for this. $50,000 piece of junk.

without knowing how it was maintained during the lease why would you automatically place blame on toyota?

It was maintained. The records from the previous owner show that, as it was a lease return. My BF did all the service work it ever needed. No one did anything to cause this. He was just a Toyota a month ago and spent $$$ on it's maintenance service.

are you talking about receipts provided that show it was maintained or are you talking about a salesman telling you "trust me bro it was maintained" because..... sounds like the latter

If your BF was mad about the engine, wait until he finds out he paid $50k for a used 2017 :rain: Hate it for you guys, but maintenance records don't always tell the full story.

Buying a lease return is the same as buying a car from a rental company. The person who leased the car has no incentive to make sure everything is done perfect as they are getting rid of the car when the warranty is up.

I don't believe this issue has anything to do with maintenance. It is either a flaw in the cylinder head cooling passages casting, or a lean issue caused by injector or ecm tuning. Or both, due to it always being the same 2 cylinders affected. Is the valve face or seat burning, or is it warping, being bent, or not seating/sticking? Did they machine the valve face or seat to narrow? Sure would be nice to know the root cause of it! I would guess the engine lugging fuel mileage shifting strategy is probably causing higher combustion temps, but who knows? Really sucks though for the folks that are having this happen to them for sure. You have my upmost sympathy, it's a big financial pill to swallow.

Not always the case. I have leased and I look after my trucks because you never know if you’re going to buy it out at the end. For instance my 22 Tacoma buy out is $34k Canadian. It’s an off road premium which is a steal. That or I can do a convenience deal through the dealership and have a $14,000 down payment on a new Tacoma judging by the used market where I live.

You countered his point, then completely reinforced his point. If you intend to trade it, there's no incentive for you to take care of it, aside from keeping it in tradable condition. For most (who aren't enthusiasts), thats the bare minimum, or less-than. We all know general statements like his claim aren't always the case. But generally speaking, its the case.

if I sell my lease trucks, I ask top dollar and have service records to pass on to the next guy to maintain his/her powertrain warranty. If I were to buy a used leased truck, and as you say most people don’t service them, then I’d want the service history.
