Time to talk to a machine shop preferably one that has done import engines before.

I think this is a very good foundation for your rebuild.

Cylinders look honable....to me from my house.

Bring it by a shop, see what they think. If it needs a bore, you;re going to be better off looking for a replacement.
I doubt any valves need replacing, just the heads redone. Looks like the pistons did all the wearing of the engine's poor life. I see scuffing (heavy) of the teflon on the skirts, some is normal but these were rocking a bit.

Looks to me like the last pic. of headgaskets had a leak in the middle cylinder.

I will look more at that tomorrow. Even if one failed why would they all be locked up?

Check the fuel source at the fuel rail before putting any engine in this truck. You stated cooling system was full and pistons show no signs of coolant exposure just water exposure.

at 160K the whole thing needs to be worked over...valve guides seals etc...

could be ok, just have to micrometer check them, same with the cylinder walls. Im not sure what the max is but some engines can be bored over. if its too out of whack gonna have to find a good used block.

As for the rust if theres no identifiable leak in the head gasket or cracked head...it got swamped. IE mabye got shut off before it hydrolocked but thats the only way I see ALL of the piston walls to get corroded.

No doubt, i just meant i didn't think it needed new valves and they were just stuck, not bent.

Wonder what a reputable mechanic shop would advise.....new engine, refresh this one....... they're prob. right.

The machine shop i goto would recomend a rebuild. But they do some awsome work. They will be looking at my 3.0 soon. And helping me decide upon a 3.4 conversion or rebuild.

Not worth rebuilding. Buy an engine with half the miles for half the cost of rebuild.

@Nickj67 sorry for not chiming in here earlier. I didn't get a notification when @Slashaar tagged me.

Looks like you have a big project on your hands. Looking at your pics I'd say it's totally saveable. I used a dnj kit like you linked for my 2tr. All the gaskets looked to be good quality and pistons, rings, and bearings were all in spec.

Those bores look pretty rough. While it may be possible to hone and have them be ok, I wouldn't. It's likely they would still be bad. You can have it bored and honed .01 over and get those pistons and rings with the kit.

If you can do all the rebuild yourself and just farm out the machining and inspection it may still be a good option dollar wise but if you cant do a bunch yourself a used engine may be cheaper.

    Cool project, Good luck!

I would attempt the rebuild from how you disasembled the engine. Try it lea4n alot. Just make sure you do it a dust FREE enviroment. I prefer do do them in my house. If you run 8nto a question you know we are here to help.
