I have done this but it is for the owners convenience only. I believe I read on the owners site that the next owner will only be able to read what Toyota wrote there . On a side note , I tried to write in that the Toyota tech lied about lubing my zerks. I tried to add the note at least 6 times over several hours . It kept saying the system was down and to try later. I finally took the zerk comment out of my adding a self oil change comment and suddenly the system was up again and took it.LOL toyota :lalala:

Translation: Check the oil level. Add oil if needed.

I know what it means, what i was refering to is that why not doing the first oil change at 8000 km, the second at 16 000 km, and after each 16 000 km.

For a new engine, 16 000km for the first oil change seems way to far.

To play devil's advocate: Why does it seem way too far to you? Is this based on some factual evidence regarding current materials science and manufacturing capabilities, or is it based on what you've always done in the past?

in other words... what's the reason you're cutting off the ends of the ham?

Maybe because i have always done my own oil change at 5000 km, and on my old 2008 vw rabbit that i bought new, the first oil change was at 8000km in the owners manual and the others at 16 000km between each. I'm probably use to that, my brain don't understand that you can wait till 16K for a first oil change, you are probably right, and toyota are probably right but i don't want accept that

Nothing wrong with that. There's value to doing stuff just for "peace of mind"... I'll be doing my first oil change shortly as I've just passed 1000 miles; doing this one myself.

I'm getting ready to take mine down the street to the local shade tree and pay him $20 to change my oil. What I like about that is I can stand and watch him do it. I'll buy the oil in at Walmart and I bought a Toyota filter w/drain plug gasket on Ebay... Everything total it will cost me $58.38 + tax on the oil.

Wish I could find a place that charges $35.00 to change my synthetic oil and filter. :(

I'd call corporate and tell them. then express concern what damage this dealer may have caused you. one it will be good to have documented, two they may offer a warranty

Just to add to my comment above -- I don't question the 10,000 mile interval (normal service) as my funcar is a 15,000 mile interval and it has a twin turbo setup. I had an oil analysis done for it at a 10,000 mile oil change and Blackstone claimed plenty of oil life left, so that eliminated my concerns. I grew up doing 3,000 mile dino oil changes, this newfangled stuff is different.

There's a risk that a dealership would do the same thing. Whoever forgets to put oil in the engine is responsible. Quick oil change places buy engines all the time. I worked at a dealership that didn't tighten the lug nuts down on a tire rotate, and a tire fell off a couple miles down the road. We paid for the repair and then some. Even changing your own oil does not mean you won't make a mistake. Not doing the maintenance at the dealership gives you more links in the chain of accountability for sure. The more links, the more fingers to point when there is a problem. For me, it isn't worth the $35 savings to sit in the service lounge for a hour and a half. I keep receipts, and hope for the best.

Strictly speaking, I'd say the dumbass who drives off with the Low engine oil pressure warning light shining brightly on the dash bears some of the responsibility for subsequent damage.

It's not like the owners manual specifically directs the driver to "Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer" if it's lit up.

I've done my own oil changes for decades, though to be honest in recent times the dealership or independent mechanic prices have been low enough that it's not been worth the time and effort to do it myself on a regular basis. I've never trusted the quicky-change places though.

That said, I haven't had to sit for an hour and a half for an oil change that I can remember, typically it's been a pretty quick in and out even at a dealer. Though if I did, I'd just get work done on my laptop and the time wouldn't be wasted. Most recently I had an oil change done on my funcar along with other work at an independent shop a mile from home; I just dropped the car off and walked. Went back at the end of the day. :)

That was exactly my point. You have better luck getting it out of the dealership, who is backed by corporate, who's trying to protect the brand And customer loyalty.
Especially wheb you're getting free service for the first 2/24k

I was a combat aircraft mechanic many years ago. If it was done wrong people dint make it home. I feal the same about my vehicles maintenance. Therefore I do it my self. I know the quality that leaves my garage. When you take it somewhere else you don't know what you will get. Set up time price of oil and clean up = peace of mind to me.

Yeah, I saw that thread and in a rare fit of decency I decided that posting my thoughts wouldn't be helpful to anyone.

The one exception would be many years ago when a college buddy was driving back to school from his parents house a few hours away. On I81 in the middle of Pennsylvania driving his beater, the oil light very briefly flashed once and then stayed off so he figured he'd just check things when he next stopped for gas since it was dark out.

He didn't make it very far before the engine seized up and he had to get it towed.

Turns out the oil idiot light had lit up and the bulb immediately burnt out.

The mechanic who looked at the car was generous and bought the car for enough to cover the tow truck bill plus enough for bus fare the rest of the way back to school. (remember, it was a beater and in the rust belt, the motor had been the only thing with any value in the car)

For our truck, a socket wrench (not sure of the size, 16mm maybe), maybe a oil filter socket if its too hard to get off, a drain catch, funnel, new oil, and a new filter.

Dont even need to lift the truck

I guess I am 1 of the only idiots using my Toyota care. It's convenient for me. I can schedule early, wait for it, and make it to work by 8am.

Plus I have never changed oil. Fairly handy person, just didn't grow up with a father that ever did his own work so I never learned.

I have a good friend who has worked on cars his whole life that said he'd walk me through it the first time. looking forward to it.

May have to invest in a floor jack, impact and some stands though if I wanna be able to rotate tires. which then make my brain start thinking "ok. now how many oil changes and tire rotations do I hAve to do to be ahead after these purchases"?
