What’s the noise over the first couple seconds? Sounds like a bag of chips being crumpled. Other than that, can’t make out anything that sounds unusual.

Maybe it’s OPs stomach making the noises? Too much crying.

    What a thread..

To be honest I do not think there is an issue. You also have to be realistic with the dealer and Toyota.

The dealer is not going to rip apart a transmission to look for an issue if they do not see anything from the outside. Double edge sword because there is no way to see anything internal with the transmission unless you do take it apart. If you want them to do it, you have to pay.

If there truly is something wrong and grinding it would eventually lead to failure. Then it would be handled under warranty. Until then I would drive as normal. Toyota will not do anything, nor should they be expected to. What would you want them to do anyway? You have not proven there is a defect, and if there is they have not had a chance to resolve the issue.

Unfortunately everyone is busy. These do cost a lot of money. You will have to spend some time to have this resolved with the dealer, just like the rest of us. Like I suggested there is probably nothing wrong, and if there is and amazing grinding noise it will eventually fail and be more then enough proof for repair under warranty

    just some thought

Skipped to the end of this thread so if this has already been asked forgive me. Do you have the A/C on?

The only thing I could hear on your video is what MIGHT be the A/C "whoop" noise which is just kind of a weird quirk of the 3rd gen Tacomas. Some part of the A/C system will intermittently make a kind of whirring / "whoop" noise and it's just the refrigerant flowing through some bend or valve or something and making the pipe vibrate at just the right frequency to make a tone. The A/C noise also only lasts for a second or two, and also only happens when the vehicle is under load.

Easy to rule out, drive without the A/C on and if it happens again that's not it.

I made a post on page 12 in this thread about another thread (https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-tacoma-a-c-noise.550627/page-22) that’s trying to figure out a noise that sounds similar to this, here’s a video that I posted in that thread.

OP take a listen, it might be the same thing. Only happens with AC on and under load or accelerating past 2500 rpm

I didnt want the trans ripped apart lol just a fluid level check is fine. I also told them I would pay for it if they would have told me.

The dealer said they'd check it for free, so shame on me for believing them I guess.

I originally wanted to just continue to drive until the diff or trans went, but everyone in this thread freaked out at that idea. Only positive is that I do now have a paper trail if something does go.

    I appreciate your comment!

If you ever get it figured out I’m sure everyone in the other thread would be happy to know how.

Supposedly it’s been going on since 2016, and I haven’t found a thread that pinpoints what the actual issue is/haven’t seen anyone come ip with a resolution yet.

Theories are that it’s to do with the AC compressor or the expansion valve opening when calling air and whistling like a musical instrument when the air rushes by.

I took my truck in and had them drain/recharge the ac system but that didn’t do anything (some posters were eluding to not enough oil or refrigerant in the AC system).

My AC blows cold though and I live in a warm location.

Reading the thread they said it was air being sucked through the windshield into the AC..?? I guess they replaced the windshield?? Seems super strange

Ya I saw that it wasn't confirmed. I am at least feeling better to know that its happening with other Tacos.

Having AC issues is much better than trans issues haha

Yeah I was also uneasy until I found out it’s happening to others as well. I’m probably just going to live with it unless someone can confirm a fix, next step that my dealer wants to do was to replace the expansion valve which involves removing the entire dash…don’t want to do that on a new truck.

If anyone has a better solution that involves not taking the dash apart I’m all ears.
