I'm just curious if anyone has actually seen it happen.

Our second gens are aging and I'm just looking into engine swaps as preparation for that one day when I might need it...

I am not suggesting this swap for "more power" or whatever.
I am suggesting this as an option because sometimes we get good deals on engines (depending on availability and region, etc) and it would be good to know if this is a simple swap, or very complex.

I already posted links to V8 swap write ups.

Swapping a (dead) single vvti 4.0 for a lower mileage single vvti 4.0 is straight forward

But what about the FJ and 4runner newer 4.0 as an option??? direct swap with new ECU ?

here is all i have found so far

Wouldnt be worth your time money etc. While it might bolt up 90% of the way that extra 10% is going to chew 90% of your time and money. All for really not much. Stick with a single VVTi or if you are going to do a swap do a better swap.

you are completely missing my point.

for example, I had access to a late model 4runner engine with 90k for $1500 bucks, locally. I dont actually need an engine right now, but the availability and my ability makes what you said completely irrelevant. some wiring and an ecu arent a big deal.

I probably should have grabbed the motor and thrown it in my shed, but i dont need another project right now.

If i wanted a used single vvti motor, thats going to cost about $5k for the motor after shipping, etc. (there arent many in good shape locally)

good to know, but really doesnt tell anyone if its a direct bolt in swap with a different ecu

Wasn't trying to answer that question, because I don't have the answer. But it's something I too contemplated when I had my '15. I was always curious about the output, figured someone else might be too and figured my time and money to dyno the vehicles could save someone else the trouble.

In my experience with Toyota swaps, the CAN communications are not going to be cross compatible across platforms.

That 2020 4runner is making some jam under the curve, I rented a 2021 last year in Sedona and I don't remember it feeling that torquey compared to my 2nd gen.

I never really knew what the 4.0 4Runner dual-VVT could do as compared to it's almost-twin in the Tacoma. The diagram answered the question for me: If I'm reading the lines correctly: More power and low-end torque earlier in the rpm curve and a quick climb to the top, and end up close to each other at the finish wind-up rpm's.

So: worth doing if it was a was a direct swap, not so much since it's not. Thank you for posting it!

You are completely missing the point all together. while you might be able to source a shortblock for 1500 bucks, you will need EVERYTHING from that vehicle to make it work in a tacoma, you would essentially be doing a full drivetrain swap, full electrical system etc. The end cost would be significantly more.

5th gen 4runners feel like dogs to drive.

The FJ is the only platform to have both engines and I can't tell the difference between the years, usually the radio is the only giveaway to what year I'm driving.

Brand new single VVT short blocks are easy to come by. I wouldn’t risk the headache trying to swap in a dual VVT.

I actually have one listed for half price if you’re interested.

That guy knows more about the drivetrains in these trucks than almost anyone. Not having the answer you want isn't the same as arguing.

    Never seen it.

Seems your question was answered... no, not a direct swap. Drive train and full electrical swap.. might as well pony up for a v8 swap at that point.
His reply directly answered your question.

He answered it the last half of his reply. As well as JustDSM in his reply.
I highlighted them in bold below.

You might not like the answer, or how the answer was given, but these guys are tuners. Both of them. They know what they are talking because they deal with this type stuff daily.
It is NOT plug and play.

While thanks for the shout out, I absolutely CAN NOT be put in the same realm as JustDSM. I know my ins and outs on these trucks quite well (its just what I do with vehicles I own, I become well versed so I can efficiently repair/change/etc). I have dabbled in tuning and was able to come up with a pretty darn good auto trans tune for our 2nd gen 5 speed auto over the course of a couple years and something like 14+ revisions.

But JustDSM is multiple magnitudes above. Its his daily income.

For me the tuning and the ins and outs of how the truck works from an electronics perspective is the nerdy IT (my day to day gig) and the weekend mechanic overlapping in a neat way.
