Ever since I have owned my Tacoma ('99 2.7L Auto TRD prerunner), it has had a lot of play in the transmission shifter. Without the truck on, I can wiggle the shifter front to back and side to side. Before you tell me this is normal, please look at the pictures and video. There are 4 bushings that support 2 bolts that connect the shifter selector to the transmission linkage.

    Part number is 9038511003

I will update this thread when I install new bushings.

wow, mine does the same, and i was somewhat afraid the bushings underneath may have been worn...but, last time i had it racked rebuilding the starter, i noticed the shift linkage is bolted on, on the shifter end and the trans end...gotta love toyota

    what did these cost, btw?

They are about $1 a piece depending where you get them.

So I swapped out the bushing today in under 20 minutes. My shift now only has a tiny about of play from the whole linkage together. It is a night and day difference. I recommend doing this, it is very easy.

    All you need is:
    10mm socket
    12mm socket
    phillips screwdriver

    1. Mark the linkage under the truck and unbolt it.
    2. Remove shifter/cup holder cover.
    3. Disconnect main wiring harness from the shifter
    4. Unbolt all the bolts holding the shifter assembly to the floor.
    5. Remove shifter assembly so you can work on it out of the truck.
    6. Remove bolt that is directly under the shift lever, you have to unmount the white plastic interlock linkage so be able to slide the bolt all the way out.
    7. Remove bolt from the front of the shift linkage, access by pulling back the rubber boot.
    8. Install bushings into each end of each shifter linkage tube.
    9. Reassemble in reverse order.

This is how I marked the shifter linkage under the truck.
You can refer to the images in the first post for the location of the bushings.

Mine is a 2004, the issue since I'm picky is that when I take off the trans shift handle will move backwards or forward a little, the same when stopping. Looks like if I'm driving a stick, but I just notice today of the linkage from the transmission to the selector on the cab. I'm thinking I have some transmission mounting bushing going bad.... but I just bought this truck and not familiar....

Mine does that, except the trans shifter moves backwards and the 4wd shifter moves forward. My Prerunner did the same thing. The trans is going to move a bit under torque

Yes my transmission still moves a lot. However, replacing the bushings inside the cab on the shifter linkage almost completely stopped the shifter wiggle under torque.

The part number is in the first post. You just need 4 of them.

Just wanted to say thanks to the nzbrock for the problem update, pics, and part numbers. We just picked up the four bushings.

Thanks this is great, also found there is a light bulb there too. I always wondered why they never put a light bulb select shifter indicator. Adding to the list of things to fix.
