jtav2002, I'm sorry. If your fogs do indeed say on, then its safe to say that something is either different with your truck or the fog relay is spliced into a wire other than the green one.

The green wire is the ignition wire. It was selected by whomever created this mod. It is the only wire in the harness that is not hot when the ignition is off.

There is an extensive thread about this here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/li...glight-mod-explained-electrical-diagrams.html

    DON"T USE WIRE TAPS!!!

They're the source of all evil.
Strip the wire where you want to tap into and solder it.
In a year's time you'll kick yourself in the pants for using a wire tap

Awesome! Yes. :) I'm glad you referenced that thread, a lot of work went into it.

And that is why the green wire has voltage only when the truck is on. Also should anyone that performs this mod, and has issues with their truck starting should inspect the green wire for continuity. It is essential for starting the truck.

I have heard this from ShadowFalken too. Let's say that we want to splice into a wire but want to have the ability to disconnect it too.

I have heard about perhaps using dielectric grease and liquid tape.

Aside form soldering, what do you suggest for the best weatherproof connector?

I see your problem. You used the wrong green wire. It is the other green wire you need to splice into. That explains it.

Look at mine. Ignore the red rings, but do look at the blue splice at the top center of the photo.

No fuse necessary. Do exactly as the photo above depicts and you'll be fine. This is a very simple, safe mod to do. PiercedTiger did this back in 2007 and has had no issues. And like others have said it only takes about 10 minutes to do.

There are butt-joint style Tee connectors out there, Use them and some heat shrink.

Aside from using dielectris grease ect. on one, That only HELPS the corrosion factor, But what a lot of people don't realize is that by splicing into a wire with a wire tap your putting what ever Amp's that wire is rated to carry through the wire tap. In some cases i have seen bits of the plastic melt when used in the wrong applications ( high amp systems ), along with corrosion blah blah blah.
Just the other day I had to re-wire accesory flood Lights on a CAT d3g Dozer becuase some backyard mechanic used a wire tap to get powerr to the flood lights through his hour gauge. Cooked the gauge, the wires, It was a nightmare.
Where it's only on your fog lights i wouldnt worry about a high amp draw you'll probably be ok, but me and most other guys i work with just don't use them at all. Save yourself the troubles and backtracking down the road ;)

Crom, I was actually just coming in here to say I suspect I spliced the incorrect green wire haha. I took the one from the connector on the right, where it looks like I should have used the green wire coming from the connector to the left of it, correct?

    Exactly.

For your benefit I searched the 2007 wiring diagram to find out what that other green wire was (the one you used) and I was unfortunately, unsuccessful. I'm puzzled by that. I used the search function in Acrobat Reader... It is known has connector EA1, the green wire is pin #5.

EDIT: I found a picture of a 2007 fuse block and that pin was never connected to anything! Which tells me it may be unique 2009+ models.

Here is the deal though. I don't think it matters at all. In this mod all we are doing is tricking the relay into staying on. We're not robbing current from another circuit to power the fogs or anything like that.

It's totally up to you to change it if you want to. I was even considering changing mine to be powered from an "Always HOT" source in the fuse block like yours. I see the advantage of being able to power them at any time.

I'm a little paranoid about the splice in the ignition wire. I do deep back country solo exploration and If I couldn't start my truck for any reason that could be a problem for me. That is the whole reason I spent all the time necessary to figure out what the green wire was. I had to know.

    :)

I ended up switching it and it works the way it should. I did contemplate keeping it the way it was for the reason you said but I figure no one else has had problems so far so hopefully neither of us is the exception. I'd prefer to not have them hot all the time. And there's only maybe one time were I utilized having them on without the truck on once so that isn't a big deal to me. Thanks for the help!

Hopefully we can eventually figure out what that other green wire is. It's got me wondering now since one is always hot and the other is ignition.

    Glad to help out. :)

One last thing before I go... There is a product called liquid tape. It comes in aerosol can and brush application. I picked some up last week with the brush applicator. I am told that there is nothing better to seal a wire that has previously been spliced. It was about $5.00

    All the best,

    -Crom

Excellent, I'll pick some up. I just wrapped some electrical tape around it for the time being but this obviously sounds like a better option.

Sweet mod thanks for posting I just did it on my truck. It took more time to get the tools out then to do the mod, and once done it worked as described. :)
