    On my 2WD Tacoma I did not even see any plugs that I could remove and add the fitting. My 91 Sonoma had them everywhere.

    I'm glad this thread popped up- went and got my nipples greased yesterday amd the mechanic said some were pretty dry:boink:

    There are no zerks in the steering column according to the pictures I have seen. Also, there is no provision to grease the steering column in the FSM.

    However, there are moving parts, and the factory did put some kind of grease in there.

    Because 4x4's are more apt to be used in areas were water intrusion is likely. Depending on the 4x4 platform, usual maintenance after extensive use were axles are submersed, greasing u-joints and differential fluid changes are recommend to expel water that may have intruded.

    In traditional 2WD applications, "lube for life" is the new norm. In the 1970's, the Japanese car makers actually performed a few studies on lubed joints of all types and found it was better to go with "lubed for life" in most applications. They discerned this because many different types of joints required different spec lubes, most car mechanics of both home and professional shop were either installing the wrong lube and/or using to much and blowing out seals. Once the seals were blown, joint wear accelerated even faster.

    Ok, I greased the zerks yesterday. Now i did pump several times and no grease oozed out of the seals of the joints. But it did tried to ooze out of the coupler joints. Those that means the joint is packed and full? Thanks, and oh yes, we call them nipples too where I came from. :D

    That means the grease gun was poorly coupled to the zerks and the grease probably didn't enter the u-joint at all.

    Opinions vary on whether or pump until you hear the seals "pop", or until you see clean grease coming out of the seals. Personally, I do the latter on Tom Woods' recommendation - grease often (every 1 or 2 oil changes) and grease enough that clean grease flushes out the old grease.

    Some people say pumping til fresh grease oozes out of the seals exposes the innards of the u-joint to dirt/water/etc, but if you grease often that's not a concern as that stuff is being flushed out regularly.
