Has anyone been able to swap the "next song" button with "higher volume"?

True. I’ve gotten used to it mostly, until I go drive my wife’s car and then start all over.

Now putting the push start button right next to the 4wd selector knob is a different story. I push the 4wd knob every.single.time I start my Tacoma still.

I’ve been able to swap them in my brain. When my wife plays a song I like, now I say “turn it forward!”

    Stock. For now.
Just bought a ‘23 Tacoma. The steering wheel controls are not intuitive AT ALL! I haven’t done any mods yet outside of some led inserts for the bed. If Meso Customs is coming up with a solution to this, I’d definitely be on board.

if thats the case it might be as simple as moving some resistors around. Curious why meso made a PCB then, maybe to get the labels right?

New button overlay and resoldering small surface mount resisters isn't in a lot of people's wheelhouse.

Here’s the post with pics of both sides.
Interestingly the wiring harnesses look to be different

Ahh interesting. Definitely more complicated, would need some careful analysis to modify it. I think what I didn't take into account in my original post was the LED backlights.

I just adapted to the change. After a few mistakes of skipping past a song that i wanted to hear LOUDER my brain rewired and i learned to just reach over and adjust the volume knob on the head unit.
I found my path of least resistance and moved on.

If that's how it's set up, then you'd probably need to swap resistors around on the PCB to alter how it reads the buttons. Odds are the values or R2, R3, and R4 are all different so that the system determines which button is pushed based on the net impedance when each switch is closed, or the variation in the voltage in the output line. If R2, R3, and R4 are all essentially in series and how many engage depends on which button is activated, then it would be extremely difficult to modify that configuration without altering/replacing the PCB unit itself.

The question then might be whether the "decoder" circuit is in the HU itself, or if this design is used just to allow those controls to use only 3 wires in the "clockspring" rather than 9. If there's a processor unit somewhere in the dash which feeds the wheel control signal to the HU harness via multiple hot/cold wires rather than a variable voltage multiplexed signal then it would still be possible to cross-splice those wires.

If the 3-wire run connects all the way to the head unit, then the best option might be just to see if a button unit (PCB and all) with the desired configuration could swap into the wheel of the vehicle you're looking to modify.

many threads on this. i hate it, had my truck two years now and still hit the wrong button occasionally. Hard wired in from what I can tell. Took the steering wheel off thinking I could just turn the whole thing a quarter turn counterclockwise. no luck. someone will have to build something to change it. I'm not smart enough.

i think you are making it more complicated than necessary.
i'd use an exacto knife to cut traces as necessary. then add new traces using something like this (maybe scuffing with exacto for good adhesion):
    https://www.amazon.com/Circuit-Scribe-Non-Toxic-Conductive-Silver/dp/B00OZATJ3A/?th=1
then mask the pad landings and spray a sealer on the board.
in another thread a guy even made it easy: (post #147)
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...everse-toggle-on-steering-wheel.558265/page-8
if the 4 button piece can be rotated 90 degrees, you are done. if not, might have to relabel the buttons somehow (or live with it).
i am just hunting and pecking at the many threads (i don't really care about this) and have no first hand knowledge, but unless i am way off, this is not hard.
maybe my rambling will help someone.

edit: another trace creation option, instead of the pen, might be copper foil tape commonly used in stained glass work, etc.
that stuff can be soldered easily with a swipe of some steel wool to remove oxide layer, a dab of flux and a soldering iron hot enough
to get it done without vaporizing the foil.
i have used similar for EMI shielding in the past and it is pretty nice to work with.
might have to hunt around for maybe 1/16" width but probably exists. or could cut 1/8" easily obtained.

Same here, I've been turning the volume UP and DOWN and skipping songs NEXT and BACK for 8 months now. It is now correct, and is the way it should have come from the factory. The factory layout is a stupid design, no matter how many people go to bat for it.

When someone complains about how loud something is, they never ask for it to be turned left.

No. That's not possible. Look at the diagram in post#68. There are 3 wires to the HU from the steering wheel switches for volume and select. The head unit measures resistance (or voltage) depending on which button is pressed.

The resister ladder design hypothetically allows the design to use the same resistor value for all the resistors, minimizing the number of unique parts on the board parts list. Each button closure runs through a different number of resistors and they sum together. It's also slightly less copper trace runs this way. So typically can't even swap resistors in these designs.
