Dropped a LED in the housing and had to remove to get the lights out. What a pain in the ass.

Honestly, couldn't have done it without this guide. That freaking screw is hidden as it is, not to mention trying to find it in the dark ass yard...

    +1 OP. great write up.

Thanks for the write up. I did mine a while back when I bought some aftermarket headlights. Then I decided to do the BHLM the same day and now the aftermarket black head lights are just sitting in my office after being on my truck for maybe 2 hours. I'll probably sell them later. Anyway the headlights were easy to get out with no issue.

And I think it looks mean as shit without the lens over the DTRLs

I have a 2013 and need to get the DS headlight off. I was changing the parking lamp bulbs to VLEDs and the damn thing fell out of the socket and is sitting INSIDE the headlamp assembly. Does anyone know if taking the headlamps out on a 2012/2013 is the same as a 2010 (when they changed the grill and headlamp style)? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ken

I used a 10MM ratcheting wrench and the 4th bolt was a piece of cake. took about 10 mins to get it out, 7 mins on the first side, and once you know what you're doing.... I tried to get a 10MM socket in there, not worth it.

You can use Window Weld Ribbon and put it in the channel the lens comes out of. I personally just reused the factory sealant when I put them back together on my 2011 and then sealed the outside with 3M sealant. No leaks at all. Your results may vary.

I had to remove one of my headlamp assemblies this weekend. On the 2013 models the headlamps are a little different but that same screw is hidden in there as well. I went from underneath, arm goes straight up to the bolt. Took all of a 15 seconds to remove it.

I did the same thing after bending my elbow the wrong way for a few minutes to get to the damn thing, then I had to do it again and still do the other side!

Pain in the butt. For now I left those screws out until I make sure my retrofit is a 100% success

You can leave them out. I never put mine back in and most people don't because it is such a PITA. It won't affect anything if you do.

Hello all. I've been reading about the process of replacing the headlights, and finally got my new lights in last night. Those bolts are a pain, but as mentioned before, once I did one, the other was not as bad. It still wasn't easy, but I knew better what I was doing.

I will say this. When putting in the new lights, if you screw the top 2 bolts in first, the bottom one is not nearly as hard to get back in.

On a side note, when I was putting everything back together, I dropped one of the 2 little screws that hold the front of the light to the grill. It banged around on some metal and I never did find it. Anyone know the size/type of screw so I can replace it?

I don't know what size it is but just take one from your other side to Home Depot / Lowes and go from there. I did the exact same thing with my 2011 and the screw went between the bumper cover and actual bumper IIRC.

I always thought that you had to remove the bumper cover to replace the headlights. This sounds much simpler than I had figured.
