The answer is, "it depends". Depends on the model Tacoma and options. For instance, http://www.toyota.com/tacoma/features/towing/7148

reluctantly i just went from a 2nd gen to a 3rd gen DB-TRD-OR and i'm somewhat disappointed. (my 2nd gen got totalled) i'm already discovering i cannot squeeze into parking spots that i would've been able to on my 2nd gen, this new truck is about 2-3 inches wider and 4 inches longer, and it certainly drives like it. i have not looked it up but i'm quite positive the turning radius circle is increased on the 3rd gen as well. it feels more like the size of a 1st gen tundra than a tacoma... IMO. i'm going to drive mine for a month or so and if i'm still unhappy i will trade it in on a used 2nd gen. for what it's worth i don't feel as if it was an upgrade. i've got a larger truck with a smaller motor, that has questionably better fuel economy. just my initial thoughts, i'm only got 400 miles on my 3rd gen.

I had the f150 extended cab, went with 2015 Tacoma trd off-road. 2016 are overpriced and waiting for any issues to be resolved before I get one.

I haven't done a ton of research on the Tacoma, but it's resale value and Toyota reliability (which used to be stellar and now I'm hearing is now just slightly above normal) as well as it's ground clearance and off-road abilities are what has drawn me to it.
So my "research" is pretty much starting here with this thread.
I appreciate the inputs and the continued inputs you all will give.

Here's another question for you. I'm a bit baffled as to why in 2016 in a "new" truck (that's apparently not fully new) they didn't put an 8 speed auto in the truck for better acceleration AND better gas mileage.
If this truck was coming out and it was 2010 I'd feel fine about a 6 speed auto.
But in 2016, it SHOULD really have a 8 speed.

Any talk of them pulling a GM stunt where the new 2015 Silverado came with a 6 speed auto, then they realized their mistake and for 2016 put an 8 speed auto in. Any talk of the 2017 Tacoma having an 8 speed?

Not sure what you're comparing but the 2nd and 3rd gen lengths and widths are nearly identical in the double cab.

It's still feb, he's fine with a 16 taco. A 17 taco won't be out until the fall...the best part is people will still be waiting on 16 Tacos through the summer. Finally, there's no such thing as a red tag sale on a Tacoma. Toyota doesn't even offer rebates or incentives, I think the best you could do in terms of an incentive on a Tacoma is a military or college grad rebate.

There are already endless complaints about the 6-speed transmission hunting for the proper gear. Can't imagine what it would do with 8-speeds.

Just needs the right 8 speed with the right software programing.
I had the ZF made 8 speed in my Laramie.
I currently have one in my Hellcat.
The ZF 8 speed is the same weight of most 6 speeds and is used in all kinds of vehicles from small cars, to luxury cars to performance cars, to trucks and SUV's. It would be a no brainer in the Tacoma. Toyota could make a deal for use in the Tacoma, or if they have a good 8 speed already, put it in there. Probably add 1-2 mpg better gas mileage and improve acceleration as well.
I can live with the 6 speed, we have one in our Odyssey Elite and it works flawlessly too. But seems an 8 speed is the sweet spot. The 9 speeds are getting negative reviews and there are 10 speeds coming which seems ridiculous and the tranny would be shifting WAY too often. 8 speeds already have 2 overdrive gears and the 6th gear is 1:1. So again, to me, 8 speeds are ideal.

The right software for programming would fix the transmission now... I personnally have had and taken 3 or 4 surveys from Toyota about this issue. I heard a few months ago about a rumor that they are looking into a software update to help this as well.

ECT PWR will get rid of this issue right away FYI.

Yeah, I agree, software programming should solve it.
But I'd still love to see an 8 speed go into it for improved acceleration and better gas mileage.
If I knew that was coming for 2017, I'd wait. If it's no where near the pipeline, since in 2015 they still offered a 5 speed auto like it was 1995, it might be too much to expect that Toyota would swap in an 8 speed a year after the 2016 release.

1200 miles on my off-road. No issues at all that I have noticed. Transmission does gear search and 6th gear is rarely obtained when on the highway but overall I am very happy with the truck.

Gonna be a lot of disappointment when there never is a reprogramming fix for the gear searching auto.

Like mostly everything about the truck except for two things. 1. By default, ECT should be enabled. I cannot drive with ECT off in town.
    2. Even with ECT enabled, I find the throttle too lazy. If you stay on it, the truck will go, but only until the ECU says so.
