Yes, the pulley still spins but the clutch on the compressor wont. Same thing happened to me. Compressor had seized and metal had gone through all my hoses from where i had continuously tried to run my A/C. Screeching could be from the pulley rotating on the clutch hub. I just know from personal experience that the same exact thing happened to me, loud screeching and no cold air, A/C light blinked and truck would stop trying to engage the A/C, took it to my local shop and ended up being a trip to the hip for a compressor and the hoses that had been punctured by the metal shards

When the compressor seizes, can you still spin it by turning that center bolt clockwise?

I have an 06 and even when i took it to a specialist they said the compressor should've given me another few years. Weird that they seize up and go out like that, but considering thats the worst thing thats ever happened to my truck ill take it lol. Good luck to you, hope that solves your problem

Thanks, and yeah my only hope is that the compressor is def not seized, and the clutch actually engages and spins without shrieking. Another guy posted the same problem i had and the clutch hub fixed it. 50 dollar part and 10 mins of work so we will see.

I think if the AC is turned off and the defroster or defroster/floor settings are not set the AC pulley will spin and the AC clutch not engaged the pulley should be quite with no screeches or noises I would assume the bearings are still good?

Thats my assumption. Theres no squealing even when the clutch briefly engages. Leads me to believe that this is the hub moreso than clutch or compressor

Good Afternoon. I'm new to the forum I just joined last night. I have a similar problem with my new 2018 Tacoma TRD OFF Road with only 1,00 miles. It's officially 1 month and 9 days old today. When I press the button it shuts off on it's own yet hot air still keeps coming out. I took it to the dealership today and they will need to keep it until next week to figure out what's wrong with it.

I don't have a clue either it's my first Tacoma and so far it's been a good truck. But it's not a good experience when things start failing.

I hear you. But this isnt your engine or trans. This is something they can iron out or you can scream at them to replace the whole damn system if they have to.

I am happy to report the clutch hub replacement did the job! Old clutch hub was in 2 pieces. AC kicked on and off without a problem multiple times. 50 dollar diy fix vs 1000 dollar shop quote ftw!20180519_202754.jpg

This happened to me today. 101 degrees was the last straw. All of a sudden AC wasn’t hot then a smell & then squeal from hell. Turned it off & it went away. Checking it on Monday. I guess 4-60 only & hopefully not expensive :annoyed:

Sorry to bring back a dead thread, my ax just decided to shit the bed. Loud squeal, burning sound then warm air blowing out and blinking light. Shut the truck off and then turned it back on, squealed quickly then nothing. I’m assuming the compressor is shot?
