Does it feel like there is a resonant cycling vibration in time with the hum ?

Something that feels like an out of balance tire or driveshaft even though that may not be it ?

yeah, you got it. I was thinking right now...and when they replaced the u-joints...i asked if they aligned everything like it was...they said they did. I remember a few threads that state the driveshaft could get out of balance...could this be another thing to look out for?

I got the same stupid humming noise w/ my truck. It used to just do it when I put it in reverse and let off the gas. Now it does it more times than not, in reverse, drive, and while driving down the road. Hitting bumps in the road seems to make it worse. I've checked everything I know to check. I can't find where the vibration is coming from, which is what it sounds like. First thought it was a tire rub, but no evidence of that. It's annoying as hell.

Mine seems to have gotten worse as the weather is getting colder. Just bought the truck in April, so haven't had it during cold weather til now. I drove about 30 or so miles tonight and it was so loud that I could hear it over the music. It's terrible. The truck drives fine and I don't notice any vibrations other than some minor in the floor when it makes the noise.

I've had it for a while...it just wasn't as loud until they messed with the u-joints...i'm so glad all my popping noises and clunks are gone...but now this...I guess it's the price I pay for not dealing with the clunks..hah...on a more positive note, i'm just happy it drives straight and smooth now that the lr ucas are installed.

It's definately not that...i have no vibes or rattling noises...it sounds exactly like a bad wheel bearing...but i was assured my bearings are good..so it seems to be it's got something to do with the drive line...not an expert mechanic but I do have some knowledge...this though, is way beyond my scope.

if that's a pinion bearing, ..well it'll cost a lot more than $20 to have it replaced ;) when you drive the vehicle, is it possible to pinpoint the direction of the sound (i.e. turning your head, to get a bearing on it?).. i know easier said than done!

... if it's obnoxiously loud, ..maybe have your mechanic test drive the vehicle, ..see if they think it's a problem..

No shop yet, but I made some home made carrier bearing spacers (1/4") and my take off shudder is gone...and also noticed the volume go down on the noise...driveline shop is still pending.

You said carrier drop lowered volume so I guess alt whine is out of the question? Any radio work done?

the noise coming from my driveshaft (pretty much confirmed that today) is still there....it's just not as loud...the drop also fixed my takeoff shudder.. alt whine? I dont think I ever had an issue with my alternator. ( :) ) ...and if by radio you mean new white leds, yep, looks awesome. :)
