Oh, if it were up to me, I would.

    But I'm dealing with customers.

And not just any customers, but railroads.

That's odd. I would expect that a company that has assets in multiple time zones would embrace UTC.

Doesn’t everyone just establish an NTP and ignore it?

It depends. Some of them run north south, some just set everything the same. Some utc.

Being a supplier, I have to support all the options.

More and more. For a long time, most things in the field were not networked though.

Hi! I'm new here. :) I have questions to ask about putting the HD out of my dead PC into my new, not here yet PC. You folks up for that?

I have two hard drives from an old computer hanging out of the open case of a third, waiting for an eventual replacement.

    What's your question?

I did this last year with a windows pc. It booted once perfectly fine, then restarted and I never got it to run again. I still don't know exactly why, but I suspect TPM shenanigans.

Whatever you do, backup your data first.

How old was your dead PC? HDs have a lifespan and it might be worth getting a new HD, installing the OS and copying your files over. If it's not SSD now's the time to consider that option. You'll still need enough storage for current files as well as a backup for important stuff so you might end up with one SSD for the OS and one spinning disk for data or backups.

Just throwing stuff out there without knowing your situation.

Just so long as it's not strapped to be the boot device in the BIOS you can slap several former primary disks into another PC so you can recover them.

    Ask me how I know.

OldPC was 12 I think. It also has a backup HD in it.
This is what is coming: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MEQKB98/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I 'think' the motherboard died on my old one. I'm hoping to pull the main HD and put it in the new one. Should have all my saved stuff on it, if it's not fried?
    Thanks!

Small form factor Dell's can be a bit challenging to add a HD hardware-wise. You may want to consider a docking station if there isn't physical room inside that case. You'll need to pop the side panel to see what they've included, such as a caddy for the existing HD.

Also, this thing says it comes with Win 7. Believe me you'll want Win 10. Did you happen to do an in-place upgrade to 10 on your old box? If so, did you happen to create a Microsoft account?

wifes machine is the same as my dead one, win7. she free upgraded to win10 and hates it. I've used it a bit and... nope. I purposely went for win7. I realize it is no longer supported.
This is from me buying my 1st PC preloaded with winME. :O The lappy I'm on right now came with Vista... now upgraded to win7.

Anyway, can I unplug the HD in the New PC, if the plugs match, and plug in my old HD, will the new 1 blow up?

    Thanks for your advice.

    So much to unpack here.

First, Win7 is gone and not supported for a reason - namely the unbelievable number of critical security flaws which are no longer being supported and patched and drove everyone to Win10.

Sorry you don't like it, but its smaller instruction set means it makes processors more efficient (they run cooler) and it is being constantly updated to address any zero-day exploits discovered. This PC Mag article explains all of the others: https://www.pcmag.com/news/18-reasons-you-should-upgrade-to-windows-10

As for the hard drive - it isn't just that the plugs match. You have to make sure the drive isn't strapped (see this: https://www.howtogeek.com/347878/what-do-the-electrical-pins-on-the-back-of-your-hard-drive-do/) to be a boot device, or is plugged into the spot designated by the motherboard for the boot device. If neither condition is present, the disk should be easily readable by the new system so you can copy files off of it.

Very interesting. Reading your posts I seemed to recall some sort of TV documentary that discussed the "fact" that railroads were on the point of synchronized clocks/time. I found this on Wikipedia (bastion of accuracy). Strange how an industry that fundamentally depends on synced date/time in operations does not understand and apply it (NTP/UTC) across IT infrastructure (apparently). Transportation companies are at least finally coming up the tech curve. At least the ones left.....

Another option would be to buy an external USB enclosure and put the drive from the old computer in there. Not much of a Windows guy, but don't 7 and 10 come with some way to import a user profile/data from an old system/drive?
