well you can get a selectable air/e-locker installed for substantially less than $10k, so you still come out on top by going with the SR5.

But is Toyota gonna (female dog) about me installing an aftermarket locker... Prolly... After the $10K is it worth getting the SR5 with now a voided warranty... Might as well get the Off-Road........................................ Just my .02

    Edit: Clarified

I should have clarified. I meant that the wheel base is shorter on an access than the double cab long bed. I think the Access is = to DCSB. I'm trying to maximize his bed storage capacity as he said that was his main reason for switching.

Thanks for all the info. Unless I can find a used TRD Pro for around a price a new TRD off-road/sport would go for I think I’ll keep it to the later of them. As far as putting the fox 3” ultimate suspension on it, what is people’s thoughts on fox suspension when it comes to on and off-road ride quality.

Yeah, I never had a locker or traction control before getting a tacoma. These things go any ware with just traction control. Only once so far have I thought "I wish I had a locker". I came from a dodge dakota with open diffs.

I went with a Fox stage 2 kit on my Taco. It's a good compromise, and feels better than the stock suspension on and off-road.

If you're replacing the suspension, there's literally no reason to go with a Pro. Get an SR5 DCLB in 4x4 so you have plenty of room for gear and kiddos, and use the money you saved off the TRD OR or PRO to just buy air lockers immediately if you think you will need them. The SR5 still has traction control and 4lo, so it is extremely capable even without lockers.

My SR5 DCLB 4x4 was $34k OTD including tax and all dealer fees, which is a LOT cheaper than a Pro or TRD OR once you factor in tax and such. The cheapest I could find a TRD OR for was $39k OTD including tax and dealer fees. Add $4k for front and rear lockers installed with a compressor and you're still saving money with a more capable vehicle. There's no downside.

Not sure where the $10k price difference between the SR5 and OR is coming from. If you price out the v6 4x4 that number is much closer to $2-3k. I was quoted ~$1800 difference when I was shopping around in late 2016.

    This and that...
    This.

I also went from a Jeep LJ to a Tacoma Sport 4 door long bed. Stoked on the space now. Never needed a locker in my previous Jeeps. Though I knew where not to take it. Also, impressed with what this truck can do stock.

New York, I paid $28k for my sr5, while the trds next to it on the lot were ~$36k.

To each his own, but since the OP mentioned that wifey will be driving this a lot, it might be worth considering a Pro. It has close to the lift you need and is very comfortable. My wife loves to drive my TRD Pro. Granted it is a bit more, but, at least for me, it came straight from the factory set up with just the right balance of comfort and ruggedness. It was nice not having to void the warranty to get it like I wanted it.

I know we're all burly forest men who only care about locking differentials and over sized suspension, but I'd also throw in the Pro has auto climate control that the Off-Road doesn't. A nice feature that's practically impossible to add later. Whether it's worth the money is, of course, personal preference.

Question for some of you that posted already:
WTF do you guys keep talking about how important a locker is? Especially on a road going vehicle? Geez. Dedicated trail rig? Sure, lock both ends. Old beater? Sure. New truck? Not needed except by a very select few, and those guys will mod it anyway.
I'm pretty sure I go off road more than 90% of you as I have to once every few weeks or so for my job. I had a 5th gen 4Runner Trail Edition for years. Had crawl control and locker and KDSS. What a waste. When you get stuck, you are stuck. Sure, that locker, in one out of a hundred stucks, might just get you out, 99 times though when you get stuck, you are stuck.

I am able to go everywhere with my Tacoma Sport that I did in my 4Runner trail with all the gizmos. Could I go further with the Tacoma OR and it's features? Truthfully, no, unless I want to risk tearing the shit out or rolling it.
If I didn't care about my vehicle and had unlimited funds for repairs, yes I could take an Off Road further than a Sport. But, if I were in that situation I wouldn't be driving a Tacoma. I would be in a Unimog or something!

OP, get what you want and take what these guys say with a grain of salt. I drive 30K a year and maybe 500 miles of it is off road, dirt and gravel roads don't count. That is less than 2% of the time. I bough something that is good for 98% of the time and is adequate for 2% of the time, not vice versa.

And guys, don't give me that crap line about "Better to have it and not need it bla bla bla"
Because, if you truly felt that way you would have a thousand lbs of spares and recovery gear in you truck all the time.

And truthfully OP, a stock two door Jeep Rubicon will blow a modded Tacoma OR off the trail, so if living off road is your thing, get a trailer for the Jeep and call it a day lol.

Sometimes the fanaticism here astounds me... might as well tell him he needs an OV tune even though he hasn't got his truck yet lol.

The anti Jeep people here astound me too, most have never had one. “DUHHRRRR TACOMA WONT BE IN THE SHOP AS MUCH DUHHRRR”

I’ve had 15 Jeeps, from XJs to new JKU rubicon’s built on 35s. Sure they’re not as reliable as they used to be, but mine never saw the shop.

Yep. Jeeps just suck on the highway. Tacoma is a Cadillac comparatively.

I would just get some 32" tires and call it good. Maybe different wheels, if you want a wider stance (for looks). Stock suspension would do just fine for what you're looking for, especially a good ride for your wife. Lifting it and putting huge tires on it would decrease your range, which wouldn't do you well when out in the middle of nowhere.

THANK YOU! This is why I drive an SR5. I knew I'd be messing with the suspension.

I'd be doing the same if I could afford it. Hows the 4 (JKU?) door drive compared to the 2?
