A Wrangler is a toy that you can use for real transportation in a pinch.
A Tacoma is much better balanced between practical and fun. It can go off-road, haul, tow, move people (DblCab), and is comfortable.

If you want to beat something off-road get a Wrangler, but you will want something else for the real world.

Only thing I can say is ya probably got lemons, old inlines usually burn a lil oil but mostly leak around the valve cover. People like to think that torquing down the bolts as hard as they can will keep them from leaking. Just snug and they wont leak a drop.

My experience with the 4.0 inline six Jeep used was they were little tractor motors, ran great and if it did not get at least 250k miles something was wrong. Inline engines just seem to go and go (look at the 2.7 I4), great design. I would not mind having an inline six in my Taco (hint, hint, Toyota!).

The older inline and slant six motors usually outlasted their "V" counterparts.

Interesting experience you had with one of the most successful and longest running engines ever made. I always love people who choose a vehicle and decide every other one is junk. Or they have some strange experience with one and decide all made by that manufacturer are junk. Are we really pretending that nobody ever had issues with a Taco? You may want to google “Tacoma recalls” before you get too silly. It has issues just like ALL the others.

Anyway, the whole Taco vs Jeep thing is a joke. I drive a Jeep and I have many friends who drive Yota,Suzuki, International Harvester (really), Ford, Chevy, Mercedes (unimog) and some others. Each one seems to excel in some way on or off road. The Suzuki is so small it manages to go around obstacles in the road others must go over. The unimog is just crazy at climbing, the Rubicon model of Jeep Wranglers (likemine) come with most of the stuff already installed that you will work for some time to get put in the others. Your Tacos tend to be much better highway vehicles with better gas mileage and speed than most everything mentioned above. Don't get me wrong, its a great rig.

I am heavily into off highway(4x4) trails so that colors my vehicle choice a great deal, as it should. Heck, the truth is neither the Jeep Wrangler nor the Taco, including their 4 door versions, are the best choices for the average suburban soccer mom. Lol

One of my many friends from this site (SupraT) has an excellent Taco and has pulled me out of a drift or two. But then again, I have pulled a lot of yotas (and all those other makes, except the unimog) out of a few spots over the years including returning the favor for Tony. Note: When it comes to 4x4ing, if you have never been stuck, you are not trying hard enough.

If you are unable to make anything other than a (place vehicle brand here) climb a hill you should just be honest and admit it. I prefer my Jeep and (of course) I know most on thissite prefer a Taco (hence the name, lol). I will judge you by who YOU are…not by what make of vehicle you drive. I just figure you have a reason you made your choice based upon your own needs.

I will spend tomorrow running up a snowy mountain with several TacomaWorld and several Frontier 4 Wheel Drive club members. We will undoubtedly have fun and while there will be a few good natured and friendly jabs one way or the other over vehicle choice, there will not be anyone allowed who finds it necessary to insult others or the brand of rig they drive beyond that good natured joke.

I've owned Jeeps all of my life, this is the correct answer.
Recently purchased a '13 DC OR 4x4 Taco, still can't bring myself to sell my 06 Rubi Unlimited though.
The Taco is much more refined and comfy. The Jeep is fun with the top and doors off on the trails. I enjoy them both, but if I could only have one, it would be the Taco.

Our jeep is on the S list this weekend...Friday, the wife leaves for work in the jeep, she comes back in ten minutes after a jeep death wobble (DW)experience, so I give her my taco, and replaned my day. It took longer to jack the jeep than to find the problem...steering stabilizer bleeding oil, and all other components tight and good.

Then I spend three hours on line and on the phone trying to find one...ended up ordering a skyjacker 7003 from summit after failing to find a bolt on or oem style one locally.

On the other hand, snow tires go on today in preperation for 8" of snow this week...Jeep has blizzacks, taco has studded winterforce UV. Since it is Sunday and I have free time, I just might hand balance the snows before they go on. I got a gravity balancer last year I haven't really used yet.

Those are some good looking trail photo. I really liked to old land cruiser. That is only 1 of 2 vintage cars I would ever own.

Looks like a good mix of vehicles. It always drives me nuts groups that all have to have the same type and look down at you if you don't have the same as them.

I'd love another jeep for trail riding but could never give up the taco for the DD.

had a '83 CJ7 i restored a bit with my dad. that thing was a beast. i would LOVE to build another jeep on a YJ frame(boxed galvanized frame vs 2 C Channels welded together on the CJ) full width axles, 4.0 I6 block, 4.2 I6 crank, head work, and a torquey cam, would pull the butt hole out of an elephant!

but i do love my tacoma for daily driving and romping around, but pretty soon it will be mostly a street truck since i will probably pick up another project/toy for off road

I traded in my 2005 LJ (2dr unlimited) for my 2012 DC TRD OR. I love my truck far more then the jeep. It's more comfortable, has more room, and I can haul/ tow stuff. The jeep suspension was squishy and would bottom out with any weight in the rear. It was a good trail rig, but not practical for daily driving. Plus, it only got around 14mpg, on average. I wouldn't even think of going back to a jeep.

Thats a really sharp looking 7! If I get rid of my 5 I will probably look at a 7 or a YJ just for the extra leg room, I am 6 feet tall and get scrunched up in the little 5 bad.

I think it’s great to have so many different vehicle types out on the trails with us. We had a lot of different rigs there, tires from 28" to 37"and some without any lockers, winches...etc. It keeps it from getting boring out there.

The owner of the Land Cruzer is new to wheeling and I enjoyed helping him figure out a few things. Once we convinced him he could substantially lower his air and not hurt anything, he ran right up the mountain with little effort. The full size Ford Bronco was also owned by a new wheeler...he only paid $300 for it a short time ago but made it almost all the way up one of the roughest trails in this area. And a few of the Yotas ate up the trail great but theywere all heavily built for this stuff. I had the newest rig on the trail and while I have more than enough engine, great gearing and dual lockers, it is a little low to the ground for that trail so I lost a bit of paint off my skid plates and rock rails. lol

I don’t understand those that put down others for having different choices or tastes. It does help in one way though….it tells me who I don’t want to know or wheel with when they play that kind of a game. Heck, that list ofvehicle types I listed before, with the exception of the unimog, are all member rigs from my 4x4 group the Frontier 4 Wheelers and all people I travel with all the time.

I went from a jeep to my taco. Not because I didnt love my jeep... Cause some guy pulled out in front of me and totaled it. :(

I was considering getting another jeep, BUT, wanted to move back to one vehicle, so I sold my fast as balls mini cooper and bought my taco.

My taco will never be built as capable as my jeep was (I can't afford to do it) however, my taco WILL be getting some 33's and armor, won't be wheeling it as hard as my old trusty jeep, but it WILL see trail time, and my girl and I are avid campers, hikers and rock climbers.

Do I miss my jeep? HELL YES, the people in a couple local jeep clubs didn't know I actually owned doors for mine :) can't do that with the taco.

It's comparing apples to oranges though, they're different things.

Ever wonder why Jeeps come with roll bars? And it's not just for off road.

Yup...that would be due to the stock Wrangler 2dr having a slightly better (less chance of) rollover than the stock 2012 Toyota FJC right? The 2012 FJC has a rating of 26.7% and the 2012 Jeep 2dr Wrangler is at 25.6% (lower is better) and with just under 2 inches more ground clearance on the Jeep to boot. Of course your totally different non-suv Taco is at 19.1% but if we are comparing totally different vehicle types then yours sucks as compared to the rollover statistics of a Subaru Outback's rating of 17.4%. Face it, such comparisons of non-alike vehicles just make people sound silly.

So, not only is you inference incorrect, Toyota's closest model to the Jeep Wrangler actually tips easier then the Wrangler. (do they put roll cages in those FJCs?)

Just for fun we should throw in Jeep's Grand Cherokee with a 16.8% rating which means it is much less likely to roll than your Taco though still an SUV. Or maybe compare it to another mid-size truck like the Dodge Dakota with it's 17.9% rating?

The Taco is a good, if not great vehicle...its just not for me and it's not magic.

You can't compare a Jeep with a Taco... they are completely different vehicles. Unless you want to compare the Taco to a Comanche.....

The Jeep is bar none, a better off-road vehicle. Their shorter wheel base allows them to go places longer wheel based Taco's can't. A Suzuki Samarai is even better, as they are almost the same length of an ATV.

I love my Taco, and find the EXPO rigs on here to be sweet builds! I'm not modding mine to climb mountains, as that's not what I wanted it for.... but if I were to wheel anything, I'd most likely be my 4Runner.... although... it is still longer than a Jeep.

That being said... I wouldn't want to Daily Drive a Jeep.... not enough creature comforts for me! lol!

For my 11 taco and if I could go back I wouldn't do it again. Jk had 305's getting 14 mpg taco has 285's getting 13 mpg. I had a few people telling me the mpg would be around 18 with bigger tires, but I'm a jeep guy. My next jeep will be number 10 for me.

Hmmm, if I didn't need a truck, I would have a jeep or FJ. But like people have said, more uses with the tacoma.
