Wranglers are convertibles. FJs are not. Jeep doesn't put roll cages in their Cherokees and Libertys, do they?

:stirthepot: Just stirring the pot. :D

No problem and we both know the non-FANBOY reason the wranglers have roll bars...but let’s not play like that is what was meant. The idea was that Jeeps roll easy so then NEED roll bars...but when I point out that Toyota's closest rig, the FJC, actually rolls easier according to federal test ratings...that does not count. That is the difference between a fan and a “fanboy”.

And anyway…this whole thread is attempting to compare a mid-size truck withan SUV. And not just “A” SUV but “THE”SUV. Half the time they are comparing much newer Tacos only made since '95 with old 70s and 80s Jeep wrangler vehicles. Face it, a fair comparison was never the idea of this thread.

So how is that for adding to the "stirring of the pot"? lol :)

i had my jeep liberty for 7 years... it served me VERY well.. i got tired of it.. painted it olive drab. got tired of it again... sold it (and a 04 GTO) and bought my tacoma. I miss the go anywhere.. dont care attitude that my jeep had... and the extremely good turning radius. but the tacoma is so good at so many things.. and it's very nice to have a truck bed.

my liberty was a renegade 6 speed.. 4.10's,32x10.5's, detroit locker, front traction control, painted olive drab, exhaust, intake, 3.5inch lift, custom cut CV's, full skids (tranny, engine, gas tank, tcase), rock rails, diff guards, ARB bumper with smittybuilt 10k winch, custom roof rack... the list goes on and on. wheeled like a monster.. cant count how many wranglers i've saved had to pull through where i just went :)

    ..

i hope to end up with my dad's 06 rubicon in a few years... rubicon express long arm on 35's.. warn power plant, warn front/rear bumpers and tire carrier, warn rock rails... the paint we used on it is a prototype cement mixer paint and is impossible to scratch so it Always looks this nice.

Sounds like some nice rigs. I have pulled a lot of different types of vehicles out of a jam or two. Have been pulled out a bit too. I enjoy good people...I don't care what kind of vehicle they drive.

i agree! on this day i wheeled with a bunch of FJ cruisers..(i dropped down from the harder trails wasnt locked and had AT's then). great people... and great rigs. my liberty seemed to wheel a little better and fit through some tighter spots (FJ's have a lot of body work up high and down low)... but it was an outstanding time and everyone made it without help.

i like jeeps. and would not wind one for wheeling. i’m thinking about trying and getting a ’85 or so pickup or ’85 ’86 4 runner. pretty much just for trails. same damage on the taco, make it last longer. but i will steel lift it and put a front bumper on it.

x2. i turn some down. unless i can help. but i won’t just let someone use it. one down side i se too a jeep is camping. less roof more fire wood, and food( root beer) and other camping gear.

My '06. Having a hard time putting a for sale sign on it, despite only driven it once or twice since I got my Taco.

Looks like a nice rig. I have had the same issue with my Dakota Quad since I got my Jeep. I don't drive it but can't bring myself to let her go.

my buddy has a ’11 FJC trail team. he said that when he had his subs put in, they had some of the (i think A pillar and maybe B) plastic trim off and that it has a roll bar or something. but i’m not 100% sure. also the FJ is more likely to flip prob because it has more class and a metal roof unlike most wranglers that have a soft top.

Three times I have written a long drawn-out and somewhat snide reply to your post. Three times the internet gods have caused my diatribe to get lost. So I will just say this: You go ahead and stick with "class" and I will stick with reality. lol

My friend has A Rubicon, really capable off road.. I personally wouldn't own A Jeep for a daily driver.

Thanks. My Taco is 4x4 too, I really don't need the Jeep. I've owned A LOT of vehicles over the years, really regret letting a few of them go. I have the feeling this will be one of them if I can bring myself to part with it.

The Rubi is crazy capable off road. I've had a Jeep for a daily driver for the past 26 years, finally gave in and went for comfort with the Taco.
The Taco is plenty capable for what I want it to do off road, the Rubi is overkill but alot of fun with the top and doors off.

I looked at the 4-dr 2013 Jeep Wranglers. Versus my Taco Access Cab (note AC, not DC):

Pro's - Definitely has all the creature comforts, is quiet on the highway (with $800 hardtop), has a 6-foot cargo space with the rear seats folded, decent headroom in the cargo area with the top on. Short front/rear porches for offroading, little better ground clearance than the Taco, solid front axle, better standard skid plates, spare tire on the tailgate, removeable 3-piece hardtop, 23" shorter overall length even with 4-doors, better passenger seating obviously, 4w disc brakes, more HP, SUV-type cab, hose-out interior cleaning.

Con's - the Pentastar is going through some teething pains (Left cylinder heads on third design, with the first two designs many had to be replaced at 5k-15k miles), valve guides in heads are "unserviceable" so down the road when you need a valve job I guess you have to buy a new head, 3500 lb max towing, less payload, less cargo versatility (rollbar restricts hauling tall loads), 300 lbs heavier curbweight, it's as wide as the Taco overall but narrower in the cab and cargo area.

Purchase price for the Wrangler 4-dr with a Sport Plus or Sahara package isn't much different compared to a Taco OR/TRD, but compared to my particular Taco it's about $3000-5000 more. But I put a $2000 Leer shell on mine, so it creeps up there into the Wrangler Sport Plus range.

Overall, I can see the Wrangler 4-dr w/hardtop being a daily driver as well as a superb offroad weekend warrior, but it doesn't quite double as the versatile cargo hauler or for towing like the Taco is.

I'm a little late to the party but... I had brand new an LJ on 32s -- wabble wabble wabble all over the damm highway.

It was awesome around the hills and I had a blast in it but when it came to just driving it to town or on the highway which we do a lot of in rural NV it sucked big time.

Got rid of it for the Taco.

I even made custom bumpers for it.

Also, even with just 32s they took the paint right off the rear flares, factory paint. (sand blasted)

    DSC01055_90d28ca55db40c5cce96d2f6716fd1b0f2f02c06.jpg

    DSC_0171_0bc115973cbd96ff92943d3e2fcd13219a131bc2.jpg

    I don't miss it though.

Not a bad rig, just not good at DD even with 32s. I DD my taco with 4.56s, 35s, armor all over the place, and it's smooth and comfortable. I've driven it to ND, UT, and WY like that.

This IS my daily driver. It works well for me but I spend more time off-road than most

Oh...and that sticker you can just see the edge of behind the driver's side front fender says: Certified MAll Crawler. It was a gift from a freind. lol

I wouldn't mind too much having that as a DD. Oddly enough, one of the best offroad vehicles I've had for mild offroading (mud, some rocks, hills) was a 1967 VW bus. Put some chains on the rear w/oversized tires, that thing could get anywhere a Prerunner could go. The beauty of it was with the poptop Kombi package I had a nice camper to boot. 30 gal water tank and sink built in, icebox, folding table, rear seat opened up to a double bed, closet, aux heater that ran off the gas tank, roof rack, short front/rear porch like a Jeep, 8" ground clearance, lightweight, big double door on the passenger side and the rear door. I miss that little fucker to this day, I don't miss the 10 gallon gas tank though. That was a big drawback, had about the range of a motorcycle, 200 miles max. Had to pay under the table to pass emission tests also.

nice jeep! 4 door JK would be the exception to my no jeep DD rule... A TJ/YJ/LJ/CJ i could do daily drive... even 2 door JK i wouldn't daily drive... but a 4 door would be a good DD and great weekend warrior. Not quiet the practicality of a tacoma but not 'too' bad.
