I just towed my 3000# trailer to Williams and back to Phoenix this weekend and TC temps were hitting 245 in 3rd gear climbing the hills because of no lockup. I’ll be installing 5.29’s and a new trans cooler in the next few months so hopefully that will help keep temps down. Hopefully be able to keep it in 4th and make 5th usable again. 6th gear is just a myth. Lol.

 

aux transmission cooler helps. I tow 5100 and see 240 on long grades.

 

Just last week I towed my 5k TT from Goodyear up to Flag, averaged 11.5mpg, pan temps hit 203 and tc temps maxed at 228.
Do you pin the thermostat?
I use 5th all the time, 63mph is ideal

What exactly is done with a KDMAX tune. Are you just changing the settings in the ECU or what?

 

I think that over-simplifies things more than a bit, but yes, the tune is changing a great many values, maps, and schedules in both the ECU and TCU on these trucks to improve performance and drivability.

I supposed you could boil any tuning service down to "just changing the settings in the ECU" but a great deal of knowledge, experience, and testing goes into understanding what and how one changes those settings to improve performance while maintaining reliability.

 

OK. If I was to take the truck to the dealer for scheduled maintenance and they hook it up to their diagnostic machine, are they going to be able to say "Hey! This doesn't look right. I need to reset it." and the tune goes away?

 

Our tune does not change the ECU ID, which is what the Toyota Techstream software (Toyota's scan tool software) uses to identify the truck's ECU. So, no it would not be apparent that anything was changed.

Additionally, if the dealer performed a repair that removed your tune, such as a TSB ECU flash or ECU replacement, any tuner from the KDMax Pro tuning group will restore that tune for you at no charge, provided you make the proper arrangements with your nearest tuner for a meet.

No, sir. These tunes are strictly software changes. I can understand the wariness regarding modifications you can't see, but let me assure you these tunes are very well tested before release to the public, and on our own trucks at that! Like you, none of us wishes to destroy such an expensive vehicle. Great care has been taken, not only to improve the performance and drivability of these trucks, but also to maintain their well-earned reputation as some of the most reliable vehicles on the road today. Our tune offering has always kept an eye on that. A few extra HP or foot pounds of torque is not worth it if it comes at the cost of longevity! There are plenty of owners out there that have puts tens of thousands of miles on our tunes that can attest to their reliability.

 

I wanna get this tune in Canada but couldn't find tuners around me. What kind of options am I looking at for remote tuning?

 

you can have them send you a tune package and you can get VF tuner + Tactrix obd2 connector

I just did the tune yesterday, from @PapaRee, I must say just on the hour and a half drive home I am hooked....The shifting improved 100 fold. I opted for the Sport Tune and I can't saying anything but great things.
I do have one question, what are you guys using to monitor trans and TC temps when towing?

 

We use OBDFusion to monitor. Use Toyota PIDs.
We monitor everything—coolant temps, trans temps, timing, load, rpm, gear, torque converter, misfires, A/F, KCLV, Knock F/B, etc.
