My 1999 tacoma came factory with power locks and windows and I would like to add a keyless entry and alarm. Should I go to Toyota or does anyone recommend any good Keyless remote with an alarm? I am not looking for one with all the gismos just a simple one that does the job.

A lot of the Tacomas I have read about have different after market alarms installed at the port or dealership and there is very little information on them. In fact, a lot of people that bought their Tacoma used(like me) cant find any information on the alarm system that's on the vehicle. And alarm information on the internet seems to be scarce.

Just take it to a radio shop and see what recommendation they have. Personally, I wish mine didnt have an alarm. Cant find any informationi on it, and when something eventually goes bad, I'm gonna have to figure out how to take it out and place the factory wiring the way it was so it will not disable the ignition.

I'd say get an aftermarket alarm even if you don't want all the features available. I don't know anything about Toyota's alarms, but they will probably charge a lot since it's OEM. Look into Viper or Clifford for their basic alarms. The most basic ones will still have the unlock/lock feature, alarm chirp, and alarm. Since you only want keyless entry and alarm, it WON'T sound your alarm if someone breaks into your window. You'll need to add a sensor for that. I forget how much that sensor costs, I had it on my previous car.

Ok thanks, I've heard of viper but I'll check out Clifford. A lot of the models that I have looked at have a remote start feature which seems pretty cool but also kinda useless at the same time, for me living in socal that is. Does anyone have a remote start on there tacoma?

    Hi!
Just got a Tacoma and my first post! I used to sell these little gizmos...and you will LOVE a compustar alarm. You can get a combination alarm starter as well...and can choose your model based on what distance you would like to be able to access it, as well as whether you want a 2-way key chain. The 2-way is nice because if someone does anything to your car it pages your key chain and tells you what is going on. This saved me once in a hit and run.... caught the chick trying to leave.
Anyways, if you have anymore questions let me know...good luck with your search!

Viper and Clifford are from the same Company (DEI) They are exactly the same, just different brand/model. Although some have remote start, it's a feature that will need an "extra" module to link up to your car and remote. I had a remote start on my previous car, it was cool the first few times, but after that, I just used the key to start the car normally. With remote start, you have turn on the car with the remote, unlock your car, get in, stick key and turn into "ON" position, then you can start driving. If you don't do it in that sequence, the car shuts off (for security purposes, you don't want to start the car and have someone run in and drive away. The key has to be in the ignition. If you press the brake pedal without the key being in ON position, the car shuts off.) If you want to save money, just get a basic "keyless entry" alarm system for your car and add on the glass breaking sensor

^^ Ok thanks, yea I could picture the remote start being really cool for the first two weeks and then being over it ha. Anyways do I have to go to toyota to get a glass break sensor? It doesnt seem come with the alarms that ive looked at.

No. Viper and Clifford sells that. It's basically a small microphone attached somewhere inside your interior. It detects sound (window getting smashed) if it detects a certain decibel, alarm will trigger.

This thread is from a long time ago.. But I strongly identify with this poster. When I bought my Tacoma used it had a dealer-installed alarm system. It is the most unfriendly system I have ever encountered. If you unlock the door with just the key in the door, the alarm will go off. You must use the keyless entry. And being that the keys are 17 years old, they don't always work all the time. And once the alarm does go off, you cannot do anything until you get the keyless entry remote to work again and lock/unlock the door. I've managed to get myself stuck in the vehicle, not wanting to open the door or start the ignition or do anything on a 100*F day with an expired meter because of that stupid alarm, as I desperately tried to figure out how to disable it. Eventually the remote worked again and I was only 30 minutes late to work though very, very frustrated.

I love my 1999 Tacoma. I hate its alarm..

BigC I can relate. I had an alarm system on my 02 when I got it. couldn't get rid of it fast enough. The first clue was every time I unhooked the negative battery cable to work on the truck, the alarms would sound when I tried to reattach it. That alone was enough. I do miss the door locks unlocking on their own when I turned the truck off.
