My sensors went bad, working sometimes and sometime not and I did NOT get a code and that's why it took me 3 months to figure it out. One day would run fantastic and another day like a dog

That's what I'm thinking! I heard that ECU's up to 2000 were not communicating as well as 01-04 ECU the 01-04 work better with throwing codes-they are more sensitive. I don't want to pull the intake again but knock is bad, I don't hear knock, but I don't trust that harness. I've been in and out of there in 2 hrs taking my time. About the auto trans!! I dropped the pan, drain&fills looked clear/red but when the pan came down it was dirty! The trans filter I tried flushing, but it just kept pushing out clutch material after a whole can o' brake clean. I bought a factory filter and flushed the trans myself with 25 quarts, I know that's overkill but it's my baby. Now my truck is passing slower V-8's again. This thread convinced me that the knocks sensors and harness should be preventative maint, but the trans was most of it and I will be doing sensors/harness next using the EBay one's! Thanks to all of you're knowledge guys the old gal can stay alive.

Didn't know about 2000's and below didn't have as good communications as the 01-04's. I'm actually really surprised that your truck isn't slipping after doing a flush. How many miles did your truck have when you did this? But I'm glad this helped out and I'll try and remember what you guys have said.

The trans was in stock in a crate at Toyota brand new I put it in 35k ago but it's surprising how much crap sits in that tranny filter. That trans has been getting drain and fills every oil change because I thought the filter was not too necessary yet, but I know now every year I'll be dropping the pan and swapping filters for new ones! I hope it doesn't start slipping but so far so good. Still gonna change my knock sensors and harness even if it don't need it. It was slow before like a 22re with an auto, now it goes.

You shouldn't be worrying about your transmission slipping at all if it's brand new and especially for you changing out the oil and dropping the pan every year to change the filter. I might do what that so I don't have to worry about it anymore.

I agree, preventative medicine is best. We can almost get away with being cheapskates if we want with these trucks, but if we we go too far some yotas fubar, it's happened to me. Nowadays I'm taking real good care of it because it's been pretty damn reliable! I think Toyota had a good one with our 1st gens.

The 2nd gens ain't to bad as well. A couple that always comes in for an oil change puts Quaker state still runs great with over 350K miles. Even though I wouldn't be putting that oil in my truck.

I wouldn't use that stuff either, but it goes to show if you keep it up, there won't be monsters in the closet later.

Got the code PO333 and decided to make the 60 mile trip to Brewer Maine and let Toyota deal with it. I only want it fixed because it might damage stuff AND I love Cruise Control.... grrr.

Hope it won't be arm and leg amputation time.

If you have a multimeter you can test the sensor before replacing wiring or sensor

OK, so Downeast Toyota spent a couple hours diagnosing, and tells me that "rodent damage" was evident on the boroscopic exam, as well as tons of sunflower seeds stashed about the place wherever the damage is. I don't know the locations and details. Estimage to FIX

    Drum roll

    $2100

And the job will take 12 hours, so that has to mean two days. So will need a car rental or a hotel for the night. Parts backordered too just to make extra driving.

Will work out the logistics and I just ordered DECON to put in garage and away from dog and cat.

FIRST EVER repair needed on my Tacoma(s) this is my 4th, and got 10 years to 13 years out of first three.

As someone who does my own work this seems just absurb! But if you're happy- we're happy!

I’m glad that you can do your own work. I practice medicine and keeping current on treating humans is difficult enough for me. I leave auto repairs to those who have studied it and know what they are doing. Best wishes

Curious also: While the problem persists, (waiting parts) I noticed that RPM at 70MPH is about 3000, and it usually goes down to about 1800 on straight and level road, is this problem also associated with Trac Off, Check Engine, No Cruise Control? It acts as if it is in 4th gear (Automatic Tranny) not Drive.

Any chance you still have the torque spec for the intake manifold? I just replaced my sensors but can’t find this info anywhere

All of the FSMs that I downloaded from here for the first gen Tacoma have incomplete/corrupt pages. Does anyone have the torque specs for assembling the intake manifold?
