Put running boards on so I could get up into the dang thing.
This is something I have to live with. I lose keys. Happens about 4 times a year. So Im down to one functioning key again, and two that were missing last time I reprogrammed, but turned up since. And one on its way from Florida. Two others broken and AWOL.

My local dealership didnt mind programming aftermarket keys for me, so this time Im getting three transponder head keys without the remote entry extras.

But I cant keep going through this. I seem to recall hearing, and actually TRYING it, that you could discreetly attach a working key to the steering column somewhere, and then just use any old deadhead copy key to turn in the ignition. Seems like I did it before, but I tried today and it didnt work. Why not? Just how close to the sensor would the live key have to be? Why else might this not work? Any thots?

How much have you spent on replacement keys/reprogramming?

Salt in the wound: I don’t understand how this is possible. Does this happen more when you have kids or something?

Seriously: just make a rule in your head that your keys are only to be put in one of three places EVER. Nobody is to touch or move them. Coffee table, kitchen counter, or your nightstand.

Most hardware stores have a device that can program these keys now. Anyhoo, just leave them in the ignition - works for me.

Wull, it happens more when you've had a traumatic brain injury, as I unfortunately have, so I spend a lot of time with the faculties I have left trying to come up with workarounds to compensate for the faculties Ive lost, to whatever extent. My visceral memory is pretty much non-existant, so I try to come up with solutions that dont involve my participation as much as possible My workaround with the keys was to just leave them in the car, because I live out in the sticks. I take them out when I go into a store, usually, but sometimes not; I just make sure I have a deadhead on me to get back in. But eventually something fouls up and I lose one and have to bust out a spare, then another 6 weeks later, etc., etc.
Anyway, I thought about getting the Techstream so I could redo the keys myself as needed, but Im not sure I have the capacity for that. Maybe I have to do tiles. But thanks!

Sorry sister. Hope you find a solution. Seems like the tiles with some backup keys tucked-away would be a good option for you.

Edit: can I suggest you read/listen to the audiobook, “The Power of Habit” He talks about habit and how it transcends brain injuries.
