What about the guys who have this problem and toyota refuses to replace the transmission.... they keep saying it's the shifter we need more time, we will call you back. etc.. over and over and over and over. Been waiting months.

Seriously guys, I don't know if anyone took my advice from my earlier post, but report this to the NHTSA. This isn't an issue to be taken lightly, and if Toyota won't own up to it, they're the ones who can investigate and force a recall. One or two people having an issue won't do much, but 10-20 people reporting the same issue, in the span of a couple of weeks, with documentation, should definitely spur them to action.

Also, forgive me for not knowing, but does anybody know specifically what manual transmission is in these trucks? As in manufacturer, model, where it's made, etc...

Since I use AMSOIL products, I was aware of their sampling program and products.

    http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/other-products/oil-analysis-services/

If you use them, I would suggest not signing up on the oil analysis web site. I found the site difficult to navigate and signing up was not trivial. Just fill out the paperwork that comes with the sampling kit and send it in.

I met with the district representative today. He finally admitted that there was an issue and that an engineer has figured out how to "fix" the problem. I find it interesting that Toyota refused to admit any problem until the non-problem had been reported, investigated and solved. Toyota knew about the problem for some time before admitting there was a problem. It will take some time for the new parts to be manufactured and distributed.

Anyhow, I found the description of the problem and the proposed "fix" plausible. Toyota believes that gear oil is getting in behind the spring load pins that hold the shifting rails in position. When trying to shift, the oil must be forced out before the pin will retract enough to allow the shift raid to move. The proposed solution is new pins that have a groove machined in the side to allow the oil to be forced out much faster. I don't think it is my preferred solution, but it should work, if that is the problem. I suspect that the people who are not having any problems have small pins and/or large holes for the pins, allowing oil to move quickly. The people really having problems, probably, have a large pin, small hole situation, where the oil is trapped and takes a great deal of force and time to be forced out.

I am encouraged. I am disappointed it took so long for Toyota to admit.

The question is, why are some transmissions not affected, there is a manufacturing descrepancy it seems, so the fix to the manufacturing descrepancy is not to replace the out of tolerance parts, it is to modify the incorrect parts to make them work. This seems like a shitty fix for us, I would like a new transmission with correctly machined parts. Is that too much to ask for? The hundreds of hours of phone, lying, aggrivation, stress, wasted time (run a business), and service trips, I would like a new transmission. They said NO.

This is the last Toyota I will ever own, any big 3 would have already replaced the tranny, and maybe even multiple times.

Toyota should do a recall, build new transmissions that are in tolerance and any out of tolerance tranny's should be sent back to toyota to be sold as reconditioned on the aftermarket. Not stiff people who bought a brand new truck with a "fix" I have been reefing the f**** out of my shifter with 100% of my strength trying to get it out of gear, who know's what I bent inside the gearbox........

I got my truck back today after the transmission was replaced @ 2465 miles (with stuck shifter issues since 872miles).

I can tell you that it really shifts like butter. It shifts now more like a car shifter.

Previously shifting through gears was slow and sluggish. The shifter popping into neutral just never happened with the old transmission, now shifting through gears is tight and feels somewhat spring assisted. Before it was all loose and slow. Shifting from a stop going uphill I would previously have to take 1st gear to the top of the hill as it took so long to get to second gear and the truck would lag. Now i'm able to shift on the hill into second and continue.

I can now say that I can 100% feel the difference between the old and new transmission. It's like night and day. It wasnt only the sticking shifter but just the way the truck shifted it was like something i had never felt, and just wrong. Coming from only manuals in my past this just felt so wrong. Now it feels more like as close to a car that you could be. It's tight and shifts right finally.

If I was to sit in another Taco that is manual I would totally be able to feel if it had the good or bad tranny. It really is like night and day.

But still, now i have a truck that's had a replaced tranny. This is the part that really upsets me. I know if I was purchasing a used truck from someone and they said "hey the tranny's been replaced", I wouldnt blink and eye and just run away.

I can tell that many of you have not designed, toleranced and had parts manufactured. I suspect that all of the parts are within tolerance for the task of holding the shift rails in place. What the engineer missed was the hot and thin oil seeping into the void and then having to be forced out. For longevity, I would like to have a large pin and a small hole. The mechanical stresses will be less. The groove should allow the oil to escape. If this is the problem, this is a decent engineering solution. I'm going to see if this fixes my transmission and go from there.

Toyota not admitting the problem does concern me. To assign an engineer to look at the problem means they knew about the issue a long time ago. This management style is the reason I am considering looking elsewhere for my next vehicle.

    Mostly stuff I built.
Like I have said from the get go, just as this service ticket says. Stuck synchronizer hub. The detent pins may be a contributing factor. From my experience every Asin transmission I have ever run across that had issues with hanging in gear it was a synchronizer to synchronizer hub clearance issue.

That being said mine is right at 10k miles and no shifting issues yet.

The issue is having them reproduce the problem. No wants to drive the truck long enough, and on California roads it's hard to maintain speed long enough. I even let the tech drive my truck home and such for a day

I can appreciate that engineers can't foresee every possible problem when they design something, after all I've been in the software industry my entire career. However, manual transmissions have been around for over 100 years so you'd think they would've ironed out the kinks by now.

As for the delay in Toyota acknowledging and responding to the issue, remember that we live in an overly litigious society where admitting a possible problem can open you up for years of lawsuits.

The msrp should have been out in my area 2 weeks ago and they are not getting info on allotments and etc I just wonder if this issue is holding them back?? Surely since they are admitting there is a issue I would hope they wouldn't role out any 2017 m/t out of of the factory with this known problem, and fix it first even if it holds production up for a bit.

if you can please get a email or a paper or letter, something showing this info so anyone can take the info to the dealer or show proof that there is a issue so incase the dealer can't pull there is no problem. .

I have experienced the same issue as well. Seems to only become present after driving through a bit of traffic only using gears 1-4 on hotter days. Once in 5th or 6th gear you have to really put some ass into it for the truck to come out of gear.

Guess I'll call Toyota corporate tomorrow to file a case and schedule another appointment with the dealership.

First brand new car I had ever purchased and so far I am not impressed after reading this thread and the lack of response by Toyota.
