Did this a while ago, one of my favorite mods for sure. I can't remember exactly which RAM accessory i used but I believe it was actually made as a motorcycle mount. It can be adjusted in many ways. Added the magnetic magic mount as well.

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
I picked up a Ram Mount double socket swivel arm this week and installed it. It lets the phone (6Plus) vibrate too much over bumps. The socket/ball ends, even when fully tightened down on the balls, have enough give in them to let the phone vibrate. I went back to the straight arm and less adjustment to escape the aggravation of the vibrations.

I tried to shim the mating surface where the ball sockets meet up with the central joint piece using o-rings, but that didn't really help. See the attached picture to better illustrate the 'wiggle' area. That said, I'll still end up using this for another project where the vibration isn't an issue. Has anyone else had this problem with a larger phone?

I went with this knock off mount from groupon for under $10. Just need to wire the built in 2A USB port. Fits my Note 8 in Otterbox Defender case.

I want to try this mod, but I'm a bit confused as to how the M6 x 50mm socket head cap screw attaches to the pillar and the ball joint. Do you have a picture of that setup?

The socket head bolt goes through the center of the ball, resting below the surface, so it does not interfere with the swiveling capabilities. The grab handle on the A pillar is held on with 2 bolts, you remove the lower bolt and replace it with the new longer bolt, which is also holding the ball. Hopefully that helps.

Ball joint has to be hollow so the M6x50 can pass through to make the connection.

Thanks. I had not realized that the ball joint allowed the screw to go through its center. :crazy:o_O LOL. I'm ordering what I need today.

Is this still the preferred MOD to most or is there better options? I like it but it seems a little outdated compared to some of the magnet mounts.

There are heaps of options out there to suit everyone’s needs, this one most certainly isn’t the “end all, be all” of device mounts. Friends of mine have used magnet mounts with and without success. Regardless of what you choose I hope it works out for you.

I guess that kind of made me sound like a dick. I was wondering if there were and other suggestions that worked this good?

    Yawn...
Assuming your profile is up to date, (2011 Taco) and not a manual...

Which is just the mount and not the “holder.” You have to click the link and specify which phone model you have.

yes, I have done the mods
Do the RAM ball bolt mod and then use a different cradle for your phone or whatever other device you want to hold there. That's what I did.

I'm not a fan of the X-grip, as you have to use two hands, and the in-and-out isn't too smooth (heh). So I made my own cradle with a hunk of plastic, wrapped it in sheet steel and then hacked some magnets into the back of my Magpul phone case.

The short of it is - use the RAM ball bolt-mount concept, then attach whatever other cradle works best for you.

Mag mounts are nice but if you use a Wallet/case like I do it won't work.
The X mount works just fine for Waze.

Gonna change mine up, I don't use it as often as I should because of the x-grip I think. So I just ordered the Scosche magnet and flat Ram ball mount from Amazon.

Hopefully the ease of use will make me use it more and not just toss my phone in a cup holder lol.

I tried a setup similar to this with the Scosche Magnet mount, but it wasn't secure enough. It fell off several times under acceleration from a stop.
