New owner of a 2021 Tacoma TRD off-road - issue with PTR20-35110-BK (oem TRD pro 4Runner wheels)

Greetings! Recent owner of a 2021 Tacoma TRD off-road. Currently also own a 2016 Toyota 4Runner trail and previously had another 5th gen before that. Definitely a fan of the yotas and looking forward to start modding this truck out as our primary camping and off-road vehicle.

Just got a set of

$280 PTR20-35110-BK Toyota TRD 17" Matte Black Wheel

PTR20-35110-BK (17-IN Toyota TRD PRO Wheels Matte Black for 4Runner FJ Cruiser Tacoma OEM) wheels that I bought online. These are the OEM black 4Runner TRD pro wheels. I’ve seen them on tons of tacos. Discount tire was going mount them up tonight but the center bore of the Tacoma was too big for the wheels. Any idea if anything changed recently with the 21’s that would make this wheel no longer work?

Edit: 2/5 just to update - truck went to discount tire twice. Store manager (also 3rd gen owner) wanted to take a look. He confirmed they have installed these wheels on many 3rd gens. Second trip back they had the same issues. Tried 3 wheels on 2 different hubs. It was beyond the level of tightness they've ever seen for this truck/wheel combo and were seriously concerned about hammering them on and not even being able to get them off. It would have to shave metal off.

Discount Tie store manager and guys working there have been super helpful. He called the local toyota dealer just to confirm they should fit (and they said yes). He also called Olathe Toyota (who I bought these wheels from) who suspects it might be the batch of wheels I got. They've had it happen to another local Tacoma. Olathe has also been great to deal with. I am sending them back and they are going to send another set out.

 

Knock offs?

 

Don’t think so. I bought them from a place I saw others use. They all look legit.

Any rust build up on the hubs? I know everyonce in a while mine go on a little tight. I also have the t4r pro wheels on my OR.

I just briefly was out in the shop. Didn’t look like it. It’s a brand new rig with like 300 miles on it, so I wouldn’t think so...

 

If it is the SEMA TRD Pro wheels, then they should fit with no issue. I run them on my truck.

If it is the new 2021 TRD Pro wheels, then the front dust cap may need to be removed.

 

This was the bare rim - no dust cap. He showed me trying to slide it on. Would not go.

 

May I ask to see the video of them trying to slide them on?
Also the dust cap is the one on the rotor hub itself.

 

I am not at discount tire. I left. I didn’t take a video of them trying haha. Would have been.... weird.

I just installed a set on a 2021 with no issue. Is it just one wheel or were all 4 test fit and didn't fit?

 

I thought they were direct bolt ons as well. I had a set on my T4R and I don't' recall any centering ring.

 

There is no centering ring. Unless the tire tech forgot to take the adapter off the back of the wheel that fits it onto the balancer. I've seen that happen.

 

They tried to test fit two wheels - only on one hub though. So maybe the hub was out of spec?

Store manager at this discount tire had me come back down. He wanted to verify. He’s been super helpful. He tried multiple wheels on multiple hubs. Same issue. He called the local Toyota dealer to see if they had any idea - other than saying they should fit, they didn’t. He called olathe Toyota in Kansas (where I bought them from) and they confirmed this is the second Tacoma that’s reported the issue recently. They suspect a bad batch of wheels and are going to send me another set along with return labels.

 

Olathe probably got the first set of wheels returned, figured the first buyer was crazy, so sold the same exact set of wheels to you. Not calling them out. Businesses do this all the time. They don’t want to upset the first customer, so they return the wheels, then resell them because they figure the first guy doesn’t know what he is talking about.
