This is a simple mod that I think is better than Homelink® as it opens the garage door without advertising you have homelink if you leave your truck out at night. I used this mod on my Bikes.

See Smuglys version here later in the thread.

Much cleaner but no direct access to battery

I opened a small keychain Liftmaster® opener and soldered two wires to the momentary switch

Then I took out the blank to the lower left of the steering wheel (for those who have one there unused) And drilled a hole to fit a momentary switch. I slipped the opener in the blank hole and attached the wires to a couple of small phillips terminals on the switch. Put the blank back in and taped the opener under the dash with the battery exposed for easy changing.

I did NOT use the switch in the following picture I used this one bought Amazon with the tiny terminal bolts to hold the wires,

I did not need the rear bolt on the switch. I just pushed and screwed it into the blank and cut one side off to get at the terminals. Taped the opener under the dash on the fuse box with battery access. I may find a better place for it later/

Awesome. Looks clean... Definitely going to do this when my Sport arrives.

    Thanks for the detailed instructions!

    YW!!
The hardest part was drilling the hole in the blank large enough. Had to use a dremel to finalize te size. If I had to do this again I might get a smaller momentary switch.

If you deleted the battery and soldered wires there could you run it so that it only has power when the vehicle is on? Would then have the security aspect of homelink so you cant open the garage door without the vehicle having power

Voltage differences between the car and the remote will destroy the remote. A Homelink mirror involves a tiny step-down transformer.

This solution bypasses all of that, and it perfectly removable. Two soldering-burned thumbs up!

Ahh ok, I wasnt sure of the voltage on that little button cell. I'm sure we could find a way to step the voltage down, for a more permanent solution. Good write up either way!

Nice mod. FYI - Like the rest of the electronics, HomeLink doesn't work if the vehicle is off.

Good idea, but I think 12V would fry the board. I don't want to have to put resistors inline. I wanted to Keep it simple..

If I were to leave the truck outside for any length of time I can pull the battery or turn off the garage door opener itself at night if I leave the truck outside..
My MX5 has Homelink on the mirror .It's handy but I would not want to buy a new mirror to have Homelink so I made my own. I guess if i really wanted to be stealth. I could have hidden the switch under the dash panel instead of using a blank

You can apparently buy a voltage step down for like $5, adjust the output voltage to 3v and should be golden. As the cheapest security option

I'll be doing something very similar when mine arrives.. fortunately, my garage door remote takes the 12v a23 batteries, so I'll be able to wire it straight to vehicle power;-)

I'm hoping I'll be able to fit everything in the upper console.

    Nice write-up!

my 14 4runner homelink works fine with the vehicle off.

if you want to know if a homelink mirror can work w/o the vehicle on, look at the plug and see if there is 3 wires (for those that don't temp readout).

    3rd wire is constant power.

    if you wanna perm-a-wire it

tap the usb power from under the head unit
that will -not- fry the board

What's the voltage output on that? The step downs are pretty simple to run if you want to avoid running wires across the dash and keep it all by the fuse box. Plus if you use that add a circuit no wire tapping is necessary
