Offset help

I want to run 17x9 Fuel wheels, specific model is "Beast", on my '22 Off Road w/ a ~2.5" lift (Eibach coilovers). Offset options for these wheels are +1 (backspacing 5.00") and -12 (4.527"). Can someone point me towards the correct offset and let me know why? Thanks in advance.

 

Offset is only useful when you list the rim width, since it’s in reference to the width. Backspacing is the one you can use without knowing the width (within reason). Problems with Tacoma are hitting Upper Control Arm / suspension, and you need the measurement from wheel hub mounting face to rim inside edge (that is backspacing). Offset is the measurement from rim mounting fact to middle of rim width.

In general, a negative offset pushes the wheel outside the fender well. A positive offset brings the wheel inside or flush with the fender well.

A +1 offset and you are closer to rubbing on the upper control arm or suspension components.

A -12 offset and you are farther away form the upper control arm but more likely to rub on the bumper, fender liner, cab mount or mud guard.

What offset is correct for you depends on tire size and look you are going for.

275 70 with a +1 offset and 2.5 lift is probably least likely to rub. With -12 will probably need some plastic trimming.

285 70 with +1 offset would probably need a 3inch lift for no rubbing. I dont think a -12 would work without a cmc ( cab mount chop)

Depends what you mean by "correct".
By my definition, 'none of the above'; I take changing scrub radius into primary consideration. Without going into a lot of detail, changing scrub radius changes how your steering interacts with the road, through the tires.
If your goal is for the look, stance, poke, etc., get whatever.
Between your 2 choices, -12 will give you enough backspace to clear UCAs, especially if you use aftermarket to gain back caster because of the lift, as well as the changed suspension geometry.
Be forewarned, you will probably need to cut or modify other things to prevent rubbing.

 

I'm running 17x9 Method 701s in a -12 offset wrapped in 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks. Pic for reference on how far it sticks past the fender. With my C4 Fab front bumper I had no issues clearing in the front. CMC and plastic trimming was very much required, I'm finding places where I'm rubbing at full-stuff when offroading so I'm still fine tuning the plastic trimming.

 

The issue is the 9” wide rim. That’s pretty wide. So I would stick to -12 offset.

min running a 17x7 rim with +4 offset, and it’s fine. But you are 2” wider total, so your tire will be 1” more closer to the uca and 1” more outwards. Idk if that makes sense.

 

I personally would go with the +1, I’ve ran 17x8.5 +0 on both of my tacomas with 285/70/17 wildpeaks and have only had to do some light plastic trimming on the front with a 2” lift. I still have more than an inch between the tire and UCA so you should be fine there unless you go wider than 285.

 

I have the fuel beast in 17x9 with a -12 offset. Wildpeaks 285/70/17 and rubbed a ton even with fox 2.0 coil overs. Got the cmc and I did the pinch weld along with tons of trimming and that fixed it. Also have a hybrid front bumper and was planning on going up to 34s so ended up getting Camburg UCAs for even better clearance. Had no issues since even at full lock stuffed up in reverse.

If you get an UCA you can offset some of the rub by adjusting the castor. (Or is it caster?) It still is annoying as heck having the UCA and firewall in the way. (Or is it castar?)

 

This is incorrect. The tread width of a tire remains the same, regardless of the width of the wheel. There will be a small difference in section width, but it’s the tread that tends to rub.

 

I meant the width of the rim.

 

+1 for correct and best fitment. -12 is for looks, instagram.

 

I did also install SPC UCAs When I lifted and put new wheels and tires on. The alignment shop I went to would not adjust caster for any rub and were very adamant about keeping everything in speck. I know there's not a whole lot that you can do but they would not entertain the idea at all

 

I have -10 and I like the bit of poke from it. So I'd go with the -12 option.

 

well remeber to not go there again.
