You are talking about the oil pan drain plug correct? If not the drain on the filler housing I would just snug it.

The drain plug around 35-38NM/28FP(good practice always use a new drain plug gasket). I know a lot of ppl that say you can reuse them. I've even done it in an emergency. It will save you heartache in the end and it only costs penny's to replace.

Here is a good reference: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-torque-spec-guide.318116/

After 23 years I don't use a torque wrench for drain plugs and filters any more. You must have gotten a newbie that hadn't gotten a piece in a long time. LOL

Did my first oil change today and just wanted to put my 2 cents in on this thread. First off this is the easiest Toyota I've owned to change the oil, mostly due to only needing to remove 4 bolts on the skid plate. Dropped mine at 1600 miles and the oil looked fine but you can never be to cautious. I also replaced the oil filter cap, thanks to everyone who did a write up on the aluminum cap. I measured the internal tube and it was identical to the one on the truck so I didn't swap them out. I also test fitted the new filter on both caps and it fit the same on both.

On a side note, I had a 09 Tundra and have a 15 4Runner, the 4Runner is the worst vehicle ever to oil change, don't get me started.

Yes sorry, I was talking about the filter housing drain. I do always change the gasket on the oil pan drain plug, I agree, it makes sense to change it for the little cost it can save you headaches for sure..

How did the oil and filter look? I have about 1500 miles on mine, and have been debating whether or not to change mine after the break-in period.

Has anyone bought a remote oil filter kit as a way to avoid the hassle of the new oil filter and it's location? Also known as a oil filter relocation kit.

This style filter housing is great, when located on top of engine. I had a few M3 years ago and the oil change was super easy; unscrew banjo bolt, remove lid, pull paper filter up and out- easy day.
I wish all the manufacturers would adopt this top style paper filter. My sister's Pontiac had it, but the housing was plastic.

Nothing fancy, yet. Weathertech mats front/back + their mud guards, some reflective striping and custom carpets on the storage bin lids underneath the jump seats.
At least the filter housing points upward and draining the oil is easy.
I had a neighbor in high school who owned a Ferrari 275 GTB four cam. He sold it, like an idiot, to buy the Knight Rider styled TransAm when it came out, right before the value of the 275 skyrocketed. Any how, the 275 used two spin-on filters mounted high and facing downward. The system was a dry-sump design pumping 17 quarts to/from a reservoir mounted behind the passenger seat, iirc.
Tacoma oil changes seem so much easier to me. =)

About to make the oil change a bit easier. A regular drain plug can be utilized in place of the locking Fumoto/EZ Drain, for those that are uncomfortable with that design. The six point socket will never become stuck.image.jpg

    all tore up already
Definitely plan on the fumoto valve when it comes time to do my own oil changes. Had one on my last car and it was sooo convenient

I just did my first oil change on our 2014 RAV4 (first after Toyotacare ran out). I bought a nice removal tool which fit great, but when I went to remove the filter, the dealership put the plastic housing on so tight last time I cracked the plastic housing removing it. It looked like the threads were damaged as well, I should have taken a photo before throwing it away. Luckily Advance Auto had an aluminum one in stock and I was able to replace it that night. It wasn't worth trying to deal with the dealership over, they must have cross threaded and then super tightened it to get it not to leak or something, but I am sure they would never admit it, and certainly not 8 months later. I never liked that dealership, we didn't buy from them either but they were closest so we did our free services there.
I still only have 2500 miles on my Tacoma, but I will take it to a different dealership for service. I'm also going to buy a spare filter housing (aluminum) to have on hand just in case. The Tacoma and the RAV4 use the same housing.

Autoway in Pinellas Park? Same thing happened to me - I had to get a breaker bar to get the filter off and the housing got chipped during the process. On top of that, I was unable to get the filter wrench tool off the canister once I finally broke it free. LOL. Not sure I will let them do oil changes for me again.

The housing uses an o ring seal, that's what seals it, no need to make it tight. Just put a little oil on the o ring and snug it, nothing more than that is required. What oil filter wrenches are you guys using that you're finding fit best?

Yep! I don't know if I am glad or not that I am not the only one

I bought from Toyota of Tampa Bay, and had a great experience there, so I'll just have to take the trek up there for service from now on, I guess I'll get a look at how that works when I go in for the transmission TSB

I bought one from Amazon to use when I swapped out the plastic housing for a metal Toyota part.
Sure, it got a couple of bad reviews vs. many good ones. What doesn't these days? All I know is it fit the filter cover perfectly and did the job.
FWIW, my factory-installed plastic housing fought me all the way out upon removal. It was like the o-ring was dry when they put it together.
Like you say, a little oil on the new one and it went in like a charm. I torqued it to the 18 lb-ft (ain't much!) and it sealed like it's supposed to seal. =)
